The opposite edge then flares outwards and forms a much wider, rounded edge. There are three circular-headed rivets on the underside of this curved edge. Cast copper alloy handle for a folding knife. The handle is curved, circular in section and tapers from the end which was attached to the knife blade to a blunt point at the other end, with a rounded knop. There is a collar around the other end with a spherical knop projecting from its outer side and two other spherical knops evenly spaced along the outer edge. An end scraper. There is long, parallel, abrupt retouch around the proximal end on the ventral face, removing the striking platform. There may also have been very short, abrupt retouch on the distal end to produce an irregular outline, although this may also be due to natural fracture when the flake was sruck from the core. A solid copper-alloy late Iron Age or Roman head of a sheep, ram or possibly goat from a mount or figurine. The head is cast in three dimensions and is triangular in shape with one horn each side. The head measures 18.7mm in length from the top to the end of the nose; it is 9.8mm thick and 12.4 mm wide at the widest point, 24.7mm wide including the horns. A large lump of copper, it's rounded appearence suggests it has cooled from molton metal in a crucible or other mould. One side is almost flat, the top is domed and the sides rounded, it may originally have been oval as it appears to have been cut on one face, the cut is now worn. It may have been made on site or have been carried here for metal working. It is difficult to give this item an exact date although study of the composition might help, a date of Bronze Age - post-medieval has thus been given although it is likely to sit within the earlier part of this range. Post Medieval copper alloy token farthing minted for William Smith of Steyning, Sussex in 1667. Williamson Vol 3. p.1182, Sussex No.165. William Smith was a mercer. There is a reference, in Sussex Archaeological Collections 19 p.95, to a William Smith of Steyning who had an estate worth £20 seized by parliment in 1655 because the owner was either a Royalist or a Catholic (the ordnance covered both). This may or may not be the same person as issued the tokens but Williamson suggests it is.

A copper-alloy Roman sandal-sole type plate brooch, probably dating from the 2nd century AD. The plate is flat on top and takes the form of the sole of a sandal with a rounded heel and pointed toe. The front has a narrow raised border round the edge outlining a recessed area in the centre of the plate containg 9 raised circular 'nails'; five running down the centre and pairs to either side in the wider parts at the 'heel' and 'ball'. A broken cast copper-alloy pin with spherical filigree head of early post-medieval date (c. 16th century AD). The pin shaft is circular in cross section with a spherical knop at one end which projects just beyond the pin head. The other end is bent through 45 degrees and broken just below the head. The remainer is 22.1mm long by 1.9mm in diameter. The whole piece weighs 1.94 grams. An incomplete Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) cast copper-alloy strap-end, dating from the 9th century. This is an example of a Thomas Class A strap-end, with a split end, outward bowing sides, and probably a zoomorphic terminal, which has subsequently been lost, along with some of the tapering strap-end body (cf. A Medieval cast copper-alloy bow of a rotary key. The bow is lozenge-shaped with a knop on the top corner. The inner side is stepped in several places giving a slightly cruciform shape. The stem of the key is broken just below the a moulding or collar below the bow. The stem is circular in cross-section and probably drilled. There is incised line decorations over both the bow and collar which have been added by hand, it seems to be simple lines deliniating lozenge shapes although it is too worn to be certain.
