An incomplete Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) cast copper-alloy strap-end, dating from the 9th century. This is an example of a Thomas Class A strap-end, with a split end, outward bowing sides, and probably a zoomorphic terminal, which has subsequently been lost, along with some of the tapering strap-end body (cf. Thomas 2003, Datasheet 32). The split end has a central notch which creates a bi-lobed edge. Two silvered circular rivets fit at the split end, one in each lobe.
On the front surface there is a series of six panels, and possibly a portion of a seventh at the base of the brok…

A slightly corroded and damaged cast copper-alloy late early-medieval cloisonné disc brooch (Late Anglo-Saxon/Anglo-Scandinavian: late 10th/11th century AD). The brooch consists of a raised circular centrepiece (Dia.: 17.1mm) which is set into a raised collar soldered onto a circular plate from which seven equally spaced integral lobes would have emerged. Seven lobes is a common number for such 'Saunderton' type cloisonné disc brooches (Buckton 1986, 15). On this brooch four lobes have been all but destroyed, while two more are abraded at their tips. These latter flank a lobe that s…

A complete cast copper alloy stirrup-strap mount, dating from the late early-medieval period (11th century). The mount can be described as Williams (1997) Class A, no Type. Sub-pentagonal in form, the mount has an engraved surface, mostly confined to the upper half of the mount and consisting of swirls and diagonal and horizontal lines. The identification of the design is uncertain although it bears similarities to Williams (1997) Figs 20 and 28, and also Type 15. The apex of the mount is finished with a pendant lobe while the flange is set at a right angle on the reverse.

A gilded copper-alloy cloisonné brooch dating from the late Early Medieval period. The brooch is incomplete but is clearly of a type of cloisonné enamel brooch that was popular in England during the late tenth and early eleventh centuries AD. As it is incomplete it is a little difficult to determine for certain whether it falls within the flanged 'Colchester' type or the the lobed 'Saunderton' type of brooch (as distinguised by David Buckton in 'Late 10th and IIth century cloisonné enamel brooches' Medieval Archaeol 30, 1986, 8-18). The flat reverse and the damaged edges, which per…

A corroded cast copper-alloy openwork strap-end of early-medieval date (Thomas Class E, probably Type 1). The object is sub-rectangular with a thin attachment end (Th.: 2.35mm), recessed to one side. The attachment end has been abraded at the corners and bent slightly as well. It bears a pair of rivet holes around the centre. Below this end the object continues at the same width, with wavy sides. The terminal is bifid. The field is divided symmetrically along the longitudinal axis. It is probably best described as a possible inhabited plant scroll in the Winchester style, although it …

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A slightly worn and corroded cast copper-alloy strap-end. The object is crude and simply made, with a bulbous terminal (Th.: 4.7mm) and split attachment end. The split is 11mm in length. At the attachment end an iron rivet is extant, while one of the two elements has become abraded at its terminal; the other has been bent. Constructionally, this strap-end could feasibly be early medieval in date, although a medieval date ought not to be ruled out. The object is plain, of a red-brown colour with lighter corrosion product all over.

The brooch has traces of gilding on the front with a raised design of a central circle surrounded by five running spirals or scrolled tendrils. All of this is bounded by an outer circular border which has regularly spaced transverse indents. The reverse has the remains of the single lug to hold the hinge with traces of iron corrosion. It is 28.4mm in diameter, 4.6mm thick and weighs 6.68 grams. Similar b…

An incomplete silver penny of Cnut. In Fine condition, although only c.50% survives. "Short Cross type" (1029 - 1036).
The legend still present on the reverse reads [...]FPINE or [...]EPINE for both of which there are many options (for example, Aelfwine, Leofwine, Hunewine, wulfwine) Some of these names occur at several different mints and so further defining the mint and moneyer is not possible. An incomplete cast copper-alloy bridle cheek-piece of 11th-century date. The fragment measures 28.8mm by 24.7mm by 3.8mm thick and weighs 9.36g. It is very worn but appears to be a central section with worn breaks at both ends, it is irregular in shape but broadly narrows from one end to the other. At the wider end is part of the original central circular hole for the bit flanked by broken ends, one additionally split around a smaller hole at the break. The other, narrower end is also split around a hole and has broken at the spit. The sides between are irregular with a series of conv…

Early Medieval silver sceat dating to the period AD 710 to 740. Series X (type 31 Woden head / crested monster). Barrett type Ap (Metcalf 1993:279). Probably minted at Ribe, Denmark. North (1994: 65) no 116.
Areas of copper alloy corrosion on both faces suggest it is debased silver. Analysis of a similar coin, although lighter and perhaps of less good design, in the Ashmolean collection found it had a silver content of 63% (Metcalf 1993: plate 16 no.208).
