Seventeenth century traders token of Lewis Williams of Chester dating to 1667. Williamson (1889) and Dickinson (1984) catalogue a half penny of Lewis Williams of Chester but not a penny. It appears from the spacing of the words on the obverse that this token has been converted into a penny from a half penny (by removing the word HALF from between HIS and PENY, either by a change on the die or on the token. Lewis Williams half penny is Cheshire 41 (Williamson 1889, 88). This token is the second type from the county where a half penny die has been converted into a penny in this way (…

Copper-alloy object, probably the upper portion of a stirrup. From the front, the object is rectangular with a rounded end, decorated with four radiating linear grooves forming a scallop-shell design. The sides have an oblique step as decoration. The lower edge of the step on each side appears to be the broken edge of an arm which would have protruded downwards at 45° to the sides. On the reverse the upper edge of the sides are joined by an integral cross bar. This bar is angular on the lower portion and rounded on the upper edge. The roundedness is due to wear, perhaps due to…

Object type: STEELYARD WEIGHT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A corroded and abraded cast lead object - probably a Roman steelyard weight. The object is broadly circular in plan with a large, corroded iron loop (L.: 23.3mm) off centre on its upper surface. The weight tapers to a broadly oval base (33.2 by 25.7mm); the sides taper to the short ends, while the long sides have been squashed. The base is flat enough for the weight to stand. The surface is now a light-grey/white colour with numerous scratches, dents and areas of cracking. Given its current mass it is unclear how this weight fits into the Roman weight-system.

This latter rises up from the back of the bowl at ninety degrees to it. It is broadly of flat oval form, with a deep notch cut out of its front edge adjacent to the bowl.
