Early Medieval silver sceat dating to the period AD 710 to 740. Series X (type 31 Woden head / crested monster). Barrett type Ap (Metcalf 1993:279). Probably minted at Ribe, Denmark. North (1994: 65) no 116.
Areas of copper alloy corrosion on both faces suggest it is debased silver. Analysis of a similar coin, although lighter and perhaps of less good design, in the Ashmolean collection found it had a silver content of 63% (Metcalf 1993: plate 16 no.208).
