An extremely corroded outer edge from an incomplete copper-alloy single-looped medieval buckle. The frame would have been oval with a rounded oval cross-section. There is a possible transverse recess on one surface to accommodate the pin. The edge tapers as it approaches the pin bar but has broken before the latter on both ends. It has corroded to a red-brown colour with some traces of off-white and light-green corrosion product.

A bent and corroded part of a cast copper-alloy sheet plate from a buckle of uncertain date. The object is sub-trapezoidal in shape. It tapers gradually from a width of 10.8mm at the attachment end to 7.0mm towards the terminal, beyond which the sides curve to a (now abraded) rounded terminal. At the opposite end there is an off-centre tab; the tab on the other side has been lost. This is a pair of rivet holes at the frame end with a third hole central at the terminal. The object has corroded to an orange-brown colour, with large patches of light-green and off-white corrosion produc…

A large buckle which appears to be one half of a double-loop frame. It has a moulded possible trefoil at either end of the narrowed circular-section bar, and a very elaborately decorated outside edge. In the centre of the outside edge is a crown, to be viewed with the edge downwards, in relief and emphasised by six small apertures. Flanking the crown, two recessed fields may once have been inlaid. Scrolled mouldings project from the edge and the sides. It measures 29 x 44mm. Although some lack of symmetry is the result of poor casting rather than damage, this is a most unusual p…

A copper-alloy plate from a Medieval single-loop buckle (cf. PAS record NMS-5D2021). The plate is roughly semi-circular in plan, the two projecting tabs at the straight end representing the remains of the fold which would have extended into the now-missing back plate. Just inside the outer edge is an incised ropework line. There are three domed-head rivets, arranged in a triangular formation, their points flattened underneath. The upper surface of the plate retains much of its gilding. The piece measures 15.4mm long, 21.5mm wide and 5.6mm thick (0.8mm thick not including the riv…

Medieval or Post Medieval cast copper alloy double loop buckle frame. The frame has two oval loops with flat backs and bevelled outer and inner edges. Both loops have three transverse grooves in the centre of the outer side, a straight groove flanked by diagonal grooves in a chevron. The strap bar is narrowed; the pin is missing. The frame is 36.3mm long, 33.4mm wide and 2.9mm thick. It weighs 6.22 grams. A similar example is illustrated in Margerson (1993:30, no.171) from a 17th century context although it is likely similar simple forms were in use by c.1350 (Egan and Prit…

A bent and incomplete medieval copper-alloy sheet buckle plate, decorated on its upper surface. The rectangular plate is wider than is long (see dimensions below), as is not uncommon for buckles of this period, with oval frames in particular (see Whitehead 1996, 19). The plate was formed of a folded sheet, with the upper half slightly longer than the lower one (L.: 19.25mm). At the attachment end there are two perforations, towards the edge and each corner; the rivets and in situ having thick, flat heads. They connect the upper sheet to the lower. In the centre of the plate, slightly …

A corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy post-medieval plain double-looped buckle frame. The frame is missing one of its loops after an old break at the pin bar. The surviving loop is trapezoidal, with a flat lower surface and an upper surface which is bevelled externally. This gives the frame a triangular cross-section, while the pin bar is semi-circular in section. There is a knopped protrusion at each end of the pin bar. Traces of orange corrosion product at one end of the pin bar suggest that the pin may have been made of iron. The frame has a dark-grey surface where it survive…

A corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of medieval to early post-medieval date. The frame was formed of two conjoined ovals such that the sides incurve. The frame is bevelled both internally and externally on the upper surface, the latter more shallowly; the lower surface is flat. The pin bar thus has a trapezoidal cross-section. The pin is now largely missing, apart from the orange/brown corroded mass, the remnant of the iron pin. The buckle frame has a variable mid-green colour but is mostly covered in off-white corrosion product. Buckles of this size…

A slightly corroded medieval copper-alloy sheet element, possibly from a broken rectangular buckle plate. At the squared off terminal is an off-centre perforation. The other end is broken at two tabs either side of a broadly semicircular recess; the longer tab has been bent upwards slightly. The upper surface features longitudinally incised borders within which a central zone defined by crudely incised short lines. Between the central zone and the borders the field is filled in with incised zig-zags (rocker arm). The dark-green metal is overlain in places with off-white corrosion prod…

A broken and incomplete single-looped cast copper-alloy buckle frame of medieval date (13th/14th century AD). The buckle is of oval form with an offset pin bar with moulded lobe terminals; the pin bar, one end of the loop and the pin are missing as a result of old damage. The outer edge is expanded (W.: up to 5.3mm) and angled. The artefact has corroded to a dull red-brown colour with some patchy light-green corrosion. This is consistent with gilding although no gilt survives. Buckles of similar form and dimensions can be found illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 70; fig. 42).

An incomplete cast copper-alloy post-medieval shoe or knee buckle. The buckle is rectangular in plan with rounded corners. It is bevelled externally on the upper surface and rabetted at the outer edge. The bevelling is echoed internally on the lower surface. There is a elongated 'C'-shaped moulding on the upper surface along the longer sides and extending into the internal side of the outer edge, terminating in a curl. Central expansions on the longer sides have been drilled to take the separate pin bar. This latter survives in situ; being made of iron it is highly corroded. There a…

A damaged and corroded single-looped buckle. It is oval and flattened with a square cross-section. It is crude, without a narrowing of the pin bar as generally with medieval buckles. It is distorted with a grey patina and patches of off-white corrosion product all over. As the piece is undiagnostic a general medieval/post-medieval date range is offered.

Incomplete Medieval cast copper alloy single looped buckle frame. The strap bar and one end of the loop are lost to old breaks. The remaining end has an oval knop by the joint with the strap bar. The loop is widened and thickened towards the centre, oval in section with three, regularly spaced, oval expansions, a fourth is probably lost to the old break. These expansions may have been moulded decoration but details are lost to corrosion. The length is 45.8mm, the width 19.2mm, the width 4.2mm. It weighs 5.76 grams. This type of buckle frame is relatively common on Medieval sites (see,…

It is 29.6mm long, 24.1mm wide and 3.5mm thick; it weighs 8.25 grams. Whitehead (2003: 53) illustrates a similar buckle, no.293, which he dates to c,1350-1650 AD.

Such a simple buckle is hard to date precisely, Whitehead (2003) illustrates a similar buckle (page 53, No.294) which he dates to c.1350-1650 AD.

A cast copper alloy Medieval buckle pin, dating from c. AD 1250-1450. The pin is large and chunky and may have adorned a buckle for horse harnesses or something of similar weight. The loop to secure the pin to the buckle frame is broken and the ends are worn smooth suggesting a break of some antiquity. On the crown of the buckle pin above the loop is a rectangular panel with moulded decoration consisting of three horizontal lines. Otherwise the pin is plain.
