Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded, plain copper-alloy rivet-like object which might have been used to hold repairs to a vessel in place. It is sub-oval in plan with a possibly break giving a broadly straight edge to one side. On the lower surface there is an integral protruding prong towards this edge whose terminal protrudes to one side and is flattened at the base. Rolled sheet rivets replaced the earlier folded sheet rivets in pot repairs from the late 15th - 16th centuries (Egan 2005, 101) suggesting a possible late medieval to post-medieval date for this piece. It is of a red-brown metal with patches o…

A cast lead pot mend, used to mend a broken vessel in order to lengthen the period of use after damage had occurred. It is sub-circular and slightly curved in profile, with the section above the slot slightly misaligned to that below. The vessel is also curved and c. 3.5mm thick. Its dark orange-brown colour suggests that this is a corroded iron cooking vessel, of early post-medieval date.

Within this lower rivet hole corroded remains of an iron rivet. The sides of the mount are scalloped with rounded protrusions to the sides. The inward-turning hook has been bent slightly to one side as a result of old damage. The metal has corroded to a red-brown colour with larges areas of light-green and off-white corrosion product.

The broken bowl from a cast copper-alloy 17th-century post-medieval spoon. The handle and the majority of the bowl are missing, both from old breaks. The handle is rectangular in cross-section; on the lower surface it tapers to a point at its junction with the bowl. The surviving section of the bowl is shallow and has been bent upwards at the extant terminal, with breaks to each side. There is evidence on the bowl for a circular makers mark, central on the upper surface, which is now unclear but possibly a (Tudor) rose (as with SOM-7C2A26 on this database). The lower surface is plain.…

A damaged and incomplete cast copper-alloy post-medieval spoon consisting of most of the bowl and part of the handle (c. 17th century AD). Little of the handle now survives; the old break reveals a square cross-section. There is a concave depression on the lower surface at the junction of handle and bowl. The bowl was fig shaped but has suffered losses to one side and along the tip. It has a flattened rim all around. It has received numerous strikes that have resulted in the base being pushed upwards near the centre, as well as the losses mentioned and abrasions at the tip. The spoon …

The stem of the spoon is flat with chamfered edges, forming a sub-rectangular profile. It tapers to a rat-tail support on the back of the bowl which stretches for just under half the bowl's length. On the back of the stem, just below the terminal, is a probable Maker's mark comprising…
