The handle of a copper alloy (latten) Post Medieval spoon dating to the period c.AD 1550-1650. The handle ends in a seal top knop. The knop starts with a flat circular disk which tapers down to two simple balls with a moulded collar beneath. The surface of the disc is worn and has no evidence of pecked initials remaining. The knop is integral with the oval cross sectioned handle. The handle is bent and terminates in a worn break at the point where it would have attached to the bowl, now missing. An incomplete cast lead alloy (pewter) spoon dating to the 17th century. The fragment comprises of the bowl and the beginning of the stem, the rest has been lost along with the knop. The bowl is a fig-shaped form with a rounded lower edge and sides and a top narrowing to the junction with the stem, Homer (1975:22) type 'b'. The edge of the bowl is damaged with small breaks along one side and the front and back surfaces are worn and pitted. An incomplete cast copper alloy spoon handle dating to the Post-Medieval period (c. AD 1450-1600). The surviving object comprises part of the of the stem of the handle and a spherical and knop close to its terminal, although the terminal itself is missing. The spoon's stem is approximately oval in cross-section although it is quite irregular from chips to its outside. This stem survives for 11.2mm before ending in a raised collar above which is a wider spherical knop. A total of 233 pieces of lead ball shot, brought in for recording in batches of 125, 91 and 17 respectively, but here amalgamated as from the same findspot. A large number (100) have a weight of 11g +/- 1.5g, with a second main group (31) around 32g +/- 1.5g. This suggests a predominant use of pistol shot, with a notable presence of musket shot according to the main calibre divisions (Foard and Morris 2012, 121). Cast copper-alloy pedestal type seal matrix with a oval die from which rises the handle in the form of a flattened trefoil on a short, oval sectioned, stem. The upper loop of the trefoil is missing to an old break, the lower side lobes have roughly circular holes through them. The die has an incised design of the letters I C with a branching tree running between them and spreading out above and below them and no outer border. Each consisting of a kite-shaped piece of sheet metal which has been rolled into a tapering cone and the triangular 'flap' at th top ben over to create the 'head' which has been flattened. One is complete wih damage below the head, the other broken below the head. The complete example has not been flattened at the tip. The complete example measures 51.4mm in length and 11.4mm in maximum width (at the head).
