A complete cast copper alloy mount of post-Medieval date. (c.1600-c.1750). The mount is convex at the front and flat at the rear. In plan it is in the form of a heart with a fleur-de-lis terminal. The side fleurs of the fleur-de-lis curve round to join the ridge and thus have circular holes within. At the rear are two integral tapering spikes, circular in cross-section. Both of these are bent towards the fleur-de-lis end. The mount is generally corroded but patches if a shiny khaki patina survive at the front. The rear face is covered with loose light green copper alloy corrosio…

A corroded and incomplete sub-rectangular cast copper-alloy mount of post-medieval date. The object is flat with a main rectangular body which incurves at one end to a width of 4.4mm before an old break; it appears to be truncated at the other end due to old damage. Before the end narrows there is a pair of double transverse grooves on the upper surface between which possible decoration within a rectangular field now obscured by corrosion. The main body beyond has grooves running just inside the long edges. The field within appears plain, again perhaps a product of corrosion, apar…

Post Medieval, 17th century, cast copper alloy openwork mount with integral attachment spikes. The mount is flat and shaped into four lobes, two large pointed oval lobes alternating with two smaller circular lobes. The tip of one of the pointed oval lobes is lost, possibly to damage. The lobes have circular holes in the centre and there is a further hole in the centre of the mount; the holes in the pointed oval lobes join the central hole while those in the circular lobes are connected to it by an indent on the front. On the back are two integral spikes, one is complete and bent inwar…

A Post-Medieval, cast, copper alloy mount. The mount has a flat plate and is slightly heart shaped with one end tapering and folding underneath to form a hook. The reverse is flat except for the hook and a protruding stud, both of which have been integrally cast. The stud is 5.1 mm high and 5.5 mm in diameter. The metal is a brownish-red colour with an irregular formation of a green patina in some places. The mount is 12.3 mm at its widest point, and 19.3 mm long; it weighs 1.97 g. Read (1988) Fig 17 no.6 illustrates a similar hooked fitting with attachment studs. He dates…

A copper-alloy sheet binding, sub-circular in plan, of probable post-medieval date. The piece has suffered a longitudinal crack but it has only been slightly distorted in plan. The thin strip is flat at one end and cusped on the other other giving it the superficial appearance of a crown. The cusping is formed of triangles each with small semicircular cusps. An upper zone from just below the cusps is delineated by a double longitudinally incised line; the area below is plain, as is the internal surface. The upper zone is decorated with punched curvilinear decoration. Above the longitu…

A piece of dried leather is still fastened on the underside of the mount. The metal surface of the object is a red copper colour with a bright green patina in places. The mount is 32.5 mm, 25.6 mm at its widest point, and wieghs 6.82 grams. It probably dates to 1500 - 1700 AD.

A copper-alloy mount in the form of a Tudor rose of post-medieval date (16/17th century AD). This small mount is essentially flat and in the form of a double five-petalled rose with small pointed lobes in the cusps. The centre of the upper surface is moulded in low relief with five arms emerging from a central point to join the side of the internal rose. Between each arm a small spur springs from the side of the internal rose; thus five heart shaped cells are created. In one of these white enamel survives in place. In an adjacent cell formed between the roses is red enamel, and w…

A small copper-alloy post-medieval mount in the form of a fleur-de-lis. The central fleur is pointed, while the lateral ones are lobes set at right angles to it. They are delineated by V-shaped grooves between them on the upper surface. A large expanding lobe emerges from the base of the lis and is rounded at its end. The sides of the mount are bevelled subtly on the upper surface; the lower surface is flat. Emerging from the reverse of the central fleur is a truncated integral prong of rectangular cross-section, now vestigial. This is the only obvious means of attachment. Post…

A cast copper-alloy mount of post-medieval date (c.AD 1600-1750), plausibly a harness fitting. The mount has a heart-shaped plate that is very shallowly convex at the front and concave at the rear. At the narrow end there is an integral fleur-de-lis-shaped protrusion, bent down slightly at the tip. The central element of this feature is pointed and the two side fleurs are small and rounded, set at right angles to it. There is a V-shaped groove on the upper surface of the mount about halfway along which gives more definition to the heart shape. Below this, and above the lis terminal, …

Post Medieval mount dating to the 17th century for a leather item. The flat plate of the mount has a tri-lobed end with a narrowed waist underneath, the lobes each side being thin and curved out, one now bent forward at the tip. This waist then expands forming rounded shoulders before a constriction formed of indents coming in from both sides below which it expands again to a square plate with outwardly curved corners. Below the square is an incised line across the front then a wider collar with rounded ends and possibly a broken lower edge. On the back are two integral attachment s…

Post Medieval cast copper mount dating to the 16th or 17th centuries. The mount is in the form of a large circular boss with a projection to one side. The boss has a hollow back and convex front which rises in two steps to a central dome, between the first and second step is a double incised ring. The edges of the boss are irregular and slightly damaged but it seems probable there was only ever one projection. The projecting piece is in the form of an oval lobe with a smaller lobed terminal beyond, both are convex on the front and the larger lobe has a hollow back. From the back of th…

Post Medieval cast copper-alloy openwork mount with integral attachment spikes. The mount has a flat openwork plate with bevelled edges which is general piriform in shape with the top point elaborated into a trefoil. The side petals of the trefoil have circular indents in their centre and the central petal is elongated, echoing a fleur de lis. There is a projecting solid rectangular knop at the base flanked by slight rounded knops and a solid chervon across the openwork centre. A corroded post-medieval cast copper-alloy mount of 17th to 18th-century date. It has a flat oval body. From each shorter end of the body protrude a slightly raised trefoil terminal and flared terminal respectively. Each terminal features a pair of crude grooves to delineate the designs. From the flat back emerge two integral prongs. These spring from circular bases at the trefoilate terminal and the junction of the body with the other terminal. Only stubs of the prongs survive; they appear to be of rectangular cross-section. This mount has corroded to a red/brown colour. Such mounts …

A corroded post-medieval cast copper-alloy mount of c. 17th-century date. It has a flat trapezoidal body with bevelled edges on its upper surface. From the narrower end of the body an initially wider triangular protrusion emerges. From the wider end of the body is an initially narrower circular protrusion. From the flat back two integral prongs would have emerged. One no longer exists; its attachment scar is located at the centre of the circular terminal. A prong emerges from one of the bases of the triangular terminal, as such completely off centre. The prong curves inward to the cen…

A late medieval/ post-medieval gilded copper alloy disc with a (probably later) perforation close to one edge. The disc is now a little bent. Post medieval copper alloy lozenge shaped mount or stud with integral rivet spike. The mount is an almost flat plate, very slightly D-shaped in cross-section with the obvserse slightly convex, and lozenge-shaped in plan, with bevelled edges. The front of the plate is so worn that any decoration that may have been present is now no longer visible due to mud and corrosion There is an integral rivet present on the mount located centrally on the reverse; this is bent over in line with the longer axis in the direction of an end point and ends in a blunt point.
