A gilded copper-alloy cloisonné brooch dating from the late Early Medieval period. The brooch is incomplete but is clearly of a type of cloisonné enamel brooch that was popular in England during the late tenth and early eleventh centuries AD. As it is incomplete it is a little difficult to determine for certain whether it falls within the flanged 'Colchester' type or the the lobed 'Saunderton' type of brooch (as distinguised by David Buckton in 'Late 10th and IIth century cloisonné enamel brooches' Medieval Archaeol 30, 1986, 8-18). The flat reverse and the damaged edges, which per…

An incomplete Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) cast copper-alloy strap-end, dating from the 9th century. This is an example of a Thomas Class A strap-end, with a split end, outward bowing sides, and probably a zoomorphic terminal, which has subsequently been lost, along with some of the tapering strap-end body (cf. Thomas 2003, Datasheet 32). The split end has a central notch which creates a bi-lobed edge. Two silvered circular rivets fit at the split end, one in each lobe. On the front surface there is a series of six panels, and possibly a portion of a seventh at the base of the brok…

An incomplete late early-medieval cast copper alloy buckle frame (c. 10th century). Approximately 2/3 of the frame survives, with three remaining protruding conical zoomorphic heads as decoration and a pronounced sub-triangular pin rest with central groove. The zoomorphic heads seem to consist of an elongated snout with two simple eye holes. The two heads that comprise an outer edge of the buckle frame flank the pin rest, with a simple frame in between the elements. However, the third head is connected to one of the outer decorative heads by means of a thicker bevelled frame segment w…

The central decorative element from a circular enamelled brooch of late 10th to 11th century date (Saunderton type). The circular component is divided into a scrolling cruciform pattern with separate cells of red, blue and white glass made using a cloisonne technique set into a backing plate with integral raised sides. The rest of the brooch, catchplate and pin are missing. The brooch may have been gilded but there is no trace of gilding on this fragment.

Early Medieval silver sceat dating to the period AD 710 to 740. Series X (type 31 Woden head / crested monster). Barrett type Ap (Metcalf 1993:279). Probably minted at Ribe, Denmark. North (1994: 65) no 116. Areas of copper alloy corrosion on both faces suggest it is debased silver. Analysis of a similar coin, although lighter and perhaps of less good design, in the Ashmolean collection found it had a silver content of 63% (Metcalf 1993: plate 16 no.208).

An early-medieval cast copper alloy strap-end, classified as Thomas's (2003, 2) Class A, Type 2. This would date the artefact to around the 9th century AD. The strap-end is flat in profile and sub rectangular with slightly convex sides and squared off zoomorphic terminal. The plate narrows from a width of 10.56mm at the widest point to a width of 6.20mm at the base. The strap end is slit down the side creating a slit between the front and back for the upper third, this would have held the end of the strap.
