Medieval cast copper alloy buckle frame. The long frame is trapezoidal, with the outer side slightly longer than the strap bar, and it has a convex front and a flatter back. There are incised diagonal transverse lines across the three longer sides, all now worn to an almost smooth surface. The narrow, undecorated, end is slightly thinned to make a strap bar. It is 30.4mm long, 25.2 mm wide along the longer side, 23.0mm along the strap bar and 3.3mm thick, it weighs 4.23 grams. Whitehead (2003:30) illustrates an undecorated buckle of similar shape (no.169) and a buckle with simi…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete post-medieval cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame. Around a half of one of the buckle's loops has been broken away following old damage, with the outer edge gone completely and the sides surviving to differing extents above and below. The pin is also missing. The remaining oval loop is curved in cross-section due to a central recess between the sides of the buckle on the back. This is presumably a result of casting in an open, one-piece mould, whereby the metal has cooled and contracted. At the centre of the outer edge of the complete loop is an angled lobed kn…

Medieval cast copper alloy single loop oval buckle frame with an ornate outer edge and pin. The outer edge widens into a sub-rectangular bar which is thinned and narrowed in the centre giving a V-shaped cross section and a slightly V-shaped outer edge. There is a raised transverse collar across the centre of this bar at this narrowest point. The strap bar is narrowed and offset and recessed from the front of the frame with slightly thickened knops at each end. The frame is pointed oval; in section, more convex on the outer side than the inner, apart from the outer edge. The back is fl…

A complete Medieval copper alloy buckle with pin; dating to the period c.AD 1450-1550. The buckle frame is oval with an expanded flat outer edge. The outer edge widens in the centre to form a semi-circular projection flanked by slightly narrower lobed projections to give the whole outer edge trefoil appearance. The frame itself if flat and undecorated on the back, but decorated on the front with a series of incised grooves of conjoined pellets. The grooves follow the contours of the outer side on the outer and inner edges and a pair run across the central projection creating a pin res…

Post Medieval cast copper-alloy double-loop buckle frame with rectangular loops. The loops are rectangular in cross section. It has flat, trefoil projections at the corners and bilobed knops in the centre of the outer edges of the loops and at the ends of the strap bars. The knops in the cnetre of the loops have an incised transverse line across the front to act as a pin rest. One corner is now bent up 45 degrees in profile. The pin is missing. It is 34.8mm long, 30.0mm wide and 1.9mm thick; it weighs 4.89 grams. Whitehead (2003: 79) illustrates a very similar frame, no.488, which …

An almost complete Roman copper alloy military buckle dating to AD 100 to 250. The buckle consists of singular loop with semi-scrolling ands and a small integral plate with a slot for the pin. The pin is missing. The frame is D-shape and measure 25.1 mm width at the point of maximum expansion. It is sub-rectangular in section, with a convex outer side and a flat inner side and reverse. The ends of the frame adjacent to the plate are curled inwards ending in semi-scrolls either side of the missing pin. Adjacent to the frame the plate is formed of a short sub-rectangular neck that…

The front part of a copper alloy Medieval buckle plate dating from cAD1200 - 1500. The plate is rectangular in shape with two rivet holes at one end and part of the bent tabs which would have gone over the strap bar at the other. The tabs have a round based pin slot between them and cut out corners. The item has a green patina on both sides but the front also has traces of a decayed coating, probably white metal. It measures 26.84mm in length, 13.20mm in width and weighs 1.45g. Due to the simplicity it is hard to give a precise date but the size, use of separate rivets and white me…
