Seventeenth century traders token of Lewis Williams of Chester dating to 1667. Williamson (1889) and Dickinson (1984) catalogue a half penny of Lewis Williams of Chester but not a penny.
It appears from the spacing of the words on the obverse that this token has been converted into a penny from a half penny (by removing the word HALF from between HIS and PENY, either by a change on the die or on the token. Lewis Williams half penny is Cheshire 41 (Williamson 1889, 88). This token is the second type from the county where a half penny die has been converted into a penny in this way (…
