A cast lead seal matrix, circular and flat with a suspension loop in the centre of the reverse. The central motif is an eight pointed star with a pellet in each section, within a grooved border. The inscription appears to read +S' R'ASEL FILL' . WILL NIChOL'- (Seal of Rasel? son or daughter of William Nichol). The first name has proved difficult to read or decipher, there being no obvious candidate ending in ...asel. A Medieval cast lead alloy seal matrix dating from the late 12th to mid-13th century AD. The seal is circular in plan and discoidal; it has been broken irregularly into two pieces, possibly from a post-discovery attempt to open the object up, which had been folded in situ. It has been decorated on the outer seal face with an indented octofoil, which is surrounded by the legend: SIG' M[A]TILDIS : DE : hOD[...]IA . Cast lead alloy pointed-oval or vesica-shaped seal matrix dating from the medieval period, that is the 13th or 14th century. The matrix is made from cast lead-alloy with a plain reverse and what looks like a broken or damaged suspension loop at the top. The obverse is very worn and scratched; the image in the centre is no longer recognisable but it may have been capital letters or may be a bird. Fragment of a cast lead alloy pointed-oval or vesica-shaped seal matrix dating from the medieval period, that is the 13th/14th century. Only the lower half survives. The matrix would have read: [S' I]Oh'IS FIL WALT[ERI] This means it was the Seal of John, Son of Walter. There appears to have been a star or similar in the centre of the matrix and moulded ribs on the reverse. The suspension loop is missing along with the upper part of the matrix. NB: The find was not seen by the FLO. Images and findspot information were kindly supplied by the rally organiser.
