Copper alloy Medieval circular seal matrix. The reverse is flat and undecorated, with the remains of a small circular suspension loop to one side. The other face has a recessed design consisting of two birds with their feet turned outwards and their heads inwards, either side ofcentral plant-like object (possibly a tree or conifer branches). Around this is a circular dotted border and then the inscription, whichLaura Burnett suggests may bebe S': WI(h or LL']--W(ARI?) - maybe S' WILLDEWARI or similar. The matrix is likely to date to the thirteenth century, whensimple designs, including…

A broken and incomplete Medieval cast copper-alloy pedestal type seal matrix with a circular face. The handle has been almost entirely truncated, and the upper third of the die has been lost, both to old breaks. The central pedestal type handle appears to have been circular in section from the scar, a triangular indent on the scar is possible a casting flaw. The matrix has a central design of a rampant lion on a triangular shield with straight sides. There is some reddish material in the lion but this is almost certainly iron deposit rather than enamel as enamel would prevent the seal…

A Medieval cast copper-alloy pedestal type seal matrix dating to the 14th century. The matrix face is sub-circular. The pedestal is faceted with six facets and thins as it rises before it widens slightly to a collar topped by a rounded terminal. Below the collar is an incised transverse groove that emphasises the collar. Above the collar there is a flattened crescent, ends upwards, within which the terminal sits. The rounded terminal is flat with a circular piercing through it. The pedestal has areas of abrasion and a few chips in it but no clear marks which indicate the orientation o…

A Medieval copper alloy seal matrix, probably dating to c. AD 1250-1300. The seal is a pointed oval in plan, and broadly flat in cross section, although with a central longitudinal ridge running down the reverse, which expands into a now incomplete perforated lug at the top. The seal bears the device of a Pelican in its piety, depicting a bird pecking its own breast in order to feed three chicks in a nest below. The nest is depicted by a single transverse line, which sits atop a tree. This tree consists of a central longitudinal line, with a short rounded, transverse cross bar nears i…

An abraded Medieval cast copper alloy seal matrix dating to CE 1200-1350. The seal matrix is flat and pointed oval (vesica shaped) in shape. The central design appears to be a circular or oval domed shape. This interior of this feature is abraded making its depiction unclear. There appears to be 3 vertical lines running across a portion of this dome. There might also be two lines running tangentially from the edge of the dome towards the edge of the matrix's inscription. Probably a scallop shell with curved edge downwards, a popular Medieval motif but uncommon on seal matrices. Other …
