A copper-alloy seal matrix of Medieval (probably 14th century) date.
The printing face is shield-shaped, the central image and legend well executed. The image appears to be a caricature of a lion's body with a man's head. The lion is in a heraldic pose, standing rampant regardant - ie. standing on its hind legs, the head turned back towards the tail. The legend, which starts at 12 o'clock, reads '*PRIVE SVY E POV CONV', a previously recorded seal legend (see Harvey and McGuinness 1996: 117 (variant)) which roughly translates as 'Private to you and little known'.
