Medieval copper alloy pointed oval seal matrix, measuring 31.2x19.1mm and weighing 6.43g. It is 2mm thick. The matrix depicts a crowned Madonna feeding child ('Maria Lactans') above an arch, below which a figure faces left, praying. A comparison for this image can be seen on a seal matrix from Dunnington, North Yorkshire, IHS-E06142. The motif is one of the most popular images of the Virgin Mary during the 14th and 15th century, and disappears around 1550. The legend, especially the second half, is extremely worn: SIGILL SI ..... I The reverse of the seal matrix has a pierced,…

Incomplete and probably Medieval lead seal matrix, probably originally circular, with a c.5mm diameter hole pierced close to one edge. It weighs 45.77g and measures 41.57x33.21x5.24mm. Its original diameter would have been circa 42mm. One side is smooth and plain while the other has the inscription [...]IMPER[...]L around the edge, with possibly a double-stranded cross at the centre (although only a very small part remains). Laura Burnett, FLO for Sussex, comments: Simper is, I'm guessing, a mis-spelling of semper (always). Two known seal matrices using 'simper' are Oculi mei sim…

A cast lead seal matrix, circular and flat with a suspension loop in the centre of the reverse. The central motif is an eight pointed star with a pellet in each section, within a grooved border. The inscription appears to read +S' R'ASEL FILL' . WILL NIChOL'- (Seal of Rasel? son or daughter of William Nichol). The first name has proved difficult to read or decipher, there being no obvious candidate ending in ...asel. There may be another letter between the R and the A, and it is possible that the R may in fact be a P. Apart from this, however, the matrix is easy to read and the nam…

A Medieval cast lead alloy seal matrix dating from the late 12th to mid-13th century AD. The seal is circular in plan and discoidal; it has been broken irregularly into two pieces, possibly from a post-discovery attempt to open the object up, which had been folded in situ. It has been decorated on the outer seal face with an indented octofoil, which is surrounded by the legend: SIG' M[A]TILDIS : DE : hOD[...]IA . The location listed on the seal matrix has not been identified. The lead alloy is of an uneven light to medium grey colour, with the darker areas corresponding to along the b…

Medieval cast copper alloy pedestal type seal matrix with a circular face. The matrix has a central design of a cockerel standing facing right (left on the impression) within a plain line border. The legend starts at 3 o'clock (9 o'clock on the impression) with a star and reads CROV M[E] DAI (CROW ME DAY, I crow at daybreak). The edges are chipped in places which has removed the upper edges of some the letters. The handle has been almost entirely truncated, and the upper third of the die has been lost, both to old breaks. The central pedestal type handle appears to have been circular in section from the scar, a triangular indent on the scar is possible a casting flaw. The matrix has a central design of a rampant lion on a triangular sgield with straight sides. Fragment of a cast lead alloy pointed-oval or vesica-shaped seal matrix dating from the medieval period, that is the 13th/14th century. Only the lower half survives. The matrix would have read: [S' I]Oh'IS FIL WALT[ERI] This means it was the Seal of John, Son of Walter. There appears to have been a star or similar in the centre of the matrix and moulded ribs on the reverse. The suspension loop is missing along with the upper part of the matrix. NB: The find was not seen by the FLO. Images and findspot information were kindly supplied by the rally organiser.

A slightly abraded and bent lead seal matrix of medieval date (13th-14th century). The matrix is of pointed oval shape, broken at each pointed end, presumably removing any suspension loop or lug as it is otherwise flat.
