Medieval or Post Medieval cast copper alloy double loop buckle frame. The frame has two oval loops with flat backs and bevelled outer and inner edges. Both loops have three transverse grooves in the centre of the outer side, a straight groove flanked by diagonal grooves in a chevron. The strap bar is narrowed; the pin is missing. The frame is 36.3mm long, 33.4mm wide and 2.9mm thick. It weighs 6.22 grams. A similar example is illustrated in Margerson (1993:30, no.171) from a 17th century context although it is likely similar simple forms were in use by c.1350 (Egan and Prit…

Post Medieval copper alloy double-looped oval buckle with an iron pin and separate strap-plate. The loops form one continuous oval outer frame and the outer sides of the loops are slightly widened. The outer edge is rounded and the inner edge and back flat and plain. The integral strap bar is plain. The iron pin is highly corroded but remains in situ. The strap plate is formed of a thin rectangular strip of copper alloy sheet bent in half around the central bar. It has a rectangular slot at the fold for the pin and both sides are borken with irregular breaks. It is 19mm long, 21.1mm i…

Post Medieval copper alloy double looped buckle. The frame is broadly rectangular in plan with the outer edges widening in width to pointed projections, forming triangular ends. The strap bar has a lobed knop at either end. Remains of iron corrosion on the strap suggests the pin, now missing, could have been made of iron. It measures 47.3mm in length, 23.7mm in width, 2.1mm in thickness and weighs 3.7g. Whitehead (2003; 82) illustrates a similar example with a wider frame, no. 512, which is dated 1250-1700 AD.

An incomplete post-medieval cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame. Around a half of one of the buckle's loops has been broken away following old damage, with the outer edge gone completely and the sides surviving to differing extents above and below. The pin is also missing. The remaining oval loop is curved in cross-section due to a central recess between the sides of the buckle on the back. This is presumably a result of casting in an open, one-piece mould, whereby the metal has cooled and contracted. At the centre of the outer edge of the complete loop is an angled lobed kn…
