A copper-alloy early-medieval cloisonné brooch dating to the late 10th or 11th century. The brooch has seven peripheral lugs of which five survive, one of which retains a domed blue glass insert. The front of the brooch has a raised circular insert that fits into the hollow rimed section of the lugged disc. The central insert is ornately enamelled with a design of a six-spoked wheel or star. Six C-shaped strips of copper alloy form semi-circular fields around the edge of the brooch. Each semi-circular field is filled with dark blue glass. In the centre is light blue enamel, surroundi…

A Roman copper-alloy Aesica variant brooch, dating from the 1st century AD. The brooch would have been of the sprung variety, the wings taking the form of a horizontal cylinder, joined on the underside. At either end this cylinder curves upwards, terminating in a sub-circular setting, one of which contains traces of an unidentified white material. The iron axis bar is visible within a central slit in the underside of the wings. It is at this point that the now-missing pin would have been hinged. The arched bow has straight, parallel sides at the top, each edge marked by a vertical g

Roman copper alloy Hod Hill brooch probably of Hull type 62 or possibly 70C. It is in poor condition, with the hinged pin missing, broken head and damaged bow and catch-plate. There is a tiny patch of white metal coating remaining. The head is broken to one side of the slot for the hinge and the folded over section to hold the hinge is missing. The upper bow has two transverse ridges extending out wider than the rest of the bow, the lower one may extend into side knops but this is unclear due to wear. Below this is a distinct trapezoid panel, wider at the top, decorated with side knop…

The head of the pin is expanded from the shaft and has a slight point at one side to press against the back of the brooch to tension the pin. A damaged and incomplete Late Iron Age/Early Roman cast copper-alloy brooch, probably best classified as being of the strip bow type. The brooch has a rectangular bow (W.: 11.0mm). The head is the widest point (11.9mm) and features a central removal (pin slot) and a cylinder formed by rolling the head forward on itself, as is the case for this type. Retained within the slot, looped around the axis bar, is the head of the pin, the rest of which is otherwise missing. The flat bow is decorated with low transverse ridges. Some of these rows are decorated with circular punches. Below the b…

A corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy Colchester one-piece brooch dating to the late Iron Age to early Roman period (c. 25 - c. 60 AD), with half of the spring and pin missing. It retains its rearward facing hook at the top of the head. The tapering hook holds the external chord of the spring. On the side from which the spring emerges there are four coils, this side is complete, although the first coil is cracked by the head. The other side and the attached pin is entirely lost to old breaks. The wings are sub-rectangular and just cover the spring coil; they are 22.8mm wide in t…

A damaged Roman cast copper-alloy Aucissa type brooch (1st century AD). The head and bow are formed of a flat strip. At the head the upper edge is rolled back on itself, towards the front, to create a tube with a central slot (11.4mm wide). The tube would have held the axis bar on which the hinge pin turned in the slot. Part of the axis bar may remain corroded in the tube but the central part and pin are missing. An incomplete cast copper-alloy early Roman bow brooch, probably best classified as being a Colchester derivative type. The narrow head is cylindrical formed by rolling forwards, as with a strip-bow type, although the thickness of the bow is closer to the Roman hinge-headed types. Retained within the head is an axis bar, around which the pin's head survives. All that is left of the shaft is a mere vestige; the head has a spur to the rear to aid springing. A slightly corroded and damaged cast copper-alloy late early-medieval cloisonné disc brooch (Late Anglo-Saxon/Anglo-Scandinavian: late 10th/11th century AD). The brooch consists of a raised circular centrepiece (Dia.: 17.1mm) which is set into a raised collar soldered onto a circular plate from which seven equally spaced integral lobes would have emerged. Seven lobes is a common number for such 'Saunderton' type cloisonné disc brooches (Buckton 1986, 15). On this brooch four lobes have been all but destroyed, while two more are abraded at their tips. These latter flank a lobe that s…

A corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy Colchester one-piece brooch of Late Iron Age or early Roman date (1st century AD). At the head, the wings are plain flat rectangular pieces with rounded outer ends (18.0mm in total width). Copper alloy with gilding, brooch. Cast brooch resembling members of the Headstud class, albeit lacking the stud; Laura Burnett kindly identifies this as a knee brooch. Semi-tubular wings closed at their ends retain an axis bar and a nine coil spring and a pin. An integrally cast sub-rectangular plate rises above the wings, surmounted by a moulded lug with a drilled aperture of diameter circa 2mm with the stub of a loop above it. Copper alloy Brooch. Knee Brooch, as kindly suggested by Laura Burnett with reference to IOW-C9CD63and SOM-3B6BAF. The fastening may derive from the Polden Hill series (cf. Mackreth's CD PH 6, the 'Eastern' type). The plate at one end of the wings may have served as a hook, and there is the stub of a rearward pointing hook at the top of the wings. A small integrally cast top loop is of triangular form. A broad sub-rectangular section bow meets the head, and has two or more pairs of side knobs.
