A base fragment of a greyware ceramic vessel dating to the Roman period (c. AD 43 - 410). The base is almost flat, with wear marks and more recent scratches on the underside. There is very little of the vessel's body that remains adhered to the base, but there is enough to suggest an open profile vessel form, too little survives to estimate the diameter. The fragment is a blue-grey in colour, with brownish patina. The hard fired fabric is non-micaceous with abundant very fine sand temper and occasional rounded iron stone inclusions. The sherd measures 12mm in length, 49.3mm in width, …

The frame is sub-circular in cross section. Dimensions: length 12.9mm; width 14.4mm; thickness 4.1mm; weight 1.15g. See Egan & Pritchard (2002: 58-60 and 69) nos. 28, 55, 72, 88 and 269, the former are all of comparable size, the latter of which is larger has a slight offset bar. Egan and Pritchard (ibid:58)…

Part of a medieval or post-medieval cast copper alloy pot leg and foot. The leg is sub-trapezoid in section with a narrower, slightly convex back and flat front. It is broken off just above the foot. It widens to terminate in a flat, extended foot, which, when placed on a flat surface, sets the object at an angle and has a D-shaped imprint with a straight front edge. The object has a worn green-brown surface. The broken edge is abraded. The object is 46.7mm in length, 39.4mm in width and 23.3mm in thickness. It weighs 96.5g. Crudely made cast copper alloy vessels were widely used f…

Object type: SWORD
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy pommel from a sword or dagger in the shape of a human bust dating to the later Iron Age (150-1 BC). The bust is moulded in three dimensions, with the lower edge of the shoulder line demarcated by an incised groove which runs around both sides of the object. The bust ends here, at approximately the point of the clavicle. Iron staining on the sides of the shoulder appear to be from the end of the sword rather than expansions at the sides. Directly below this is a sub-rectangular attachment, much marked by iron decay, where the pommel would once have attached to the sw…

An incomplete medieval copper alloy clasp, probably from a folding strap clasp for a belt, or possibly a book fitting. The object consists of a flat sheet of metal folded in half at the midpoint, with the fold creating a circular effect in cross section. The two sides remain folded close together, although they flare slightly away from one another at the now open end. This was once held closed by two circular rivets which survive, but are no longer holding the clasp together. On the upper surface, each of the rivets is emphasised by two incised circles surrounding the rivet itse…
