Object type: HARNESS FITTING
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a corroded, cast copper-alloy terret (rein guide) dating from the late Iron Age or early Roman periods. This comprises around half of the hoop, and has been broken at the junction of hoop and bar, and the middle of the central pair of back-to-back sub-hemispherical lipped protrusions, respectively. The collar at the junction of hoop and bar is broadly sub-oval: 11.9 by 10.8mm. Vestiges of the bar suggest that it was rectangular in cross-section with rounded corners. The oval loop is circular in cross-section. It would have featured three pairs of lipped protrusions by co…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete medieval cast copper-alloy rectangular double-looped buckle frame; one of the outer edges and the pin have been lost. The central strap bar is D-shaped in section with a flat back, narrowed and recessed. An old strike has bent it to one side towards one end. The upper and lower sides are rectangular in section and the fronts curve inwards in the centre to a thin point where they meet the strap bar. The thicker outer edges are elaborately moulded into five evenly spaced disc shaped knops arranged in a row. Between the discs are deep recessed grooves with only a relatively…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A thick strip of decorated cast copper alloy bent around into a penannular form, possibly a finger ring of Roman date that was formed from a bracelet. The strip has slightly abraded edges and now has a maximum width of 16.3mm. It has a flat inner side and slightly convex outer face and is 1.9mm thick in the centre. Around the front runs a decorative panel marked by indented lines at the top and bottom. Two further grooves within these create ridge above and below a wider central band. The ends are slightly rounded but do not appear to be the original ends of the strip as the panel run…

Object type: RING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded, cast copper-alloy ring in the shape of a letter 'C' of uncertain date and function. It has a sub-oval cross-section, being flattened to the wider faces. It tapers to a point at either end; one end has been bent down slightly. The mid-green patina is mostly lost; the object is generally a corroded light-green colour over a red-brown metal. Scratching to reveal the shiny metal internally is assumed to be a recent intervention. Objects of similar form, although generally smaller size, have been recorded on this database and are often interpreted as Roman earrings.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A slightly bent medieval copper-alloy thick sheet plate, elaborately decorated on its upper surface, probably from a medieval buckle. What remains of the rectangular plate is slightly wider than is long (see dimensions below), as is not uncommon for buckles of this period, in particular those with oval frames (cf. Whitehead 1996, 19). At the attachment end the perforation at each corner has been abraded through; the rivets have been lost. At the other end the is broken, with any connecting strips now gone. At the centre of this latter end is a central semicircular removal, possibly a …

Object type: STEELYARD WEIGHT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded and abraded cast lead object with broken iron pronged remains at both apexes - a small Roman steelyard weight. The object is biconical in shape, as typical Roman steelyard weights were (Geake 2001, 67), with iron loops for suspension. The surface is now white with numerous superficial scratches and dents. Given its current mass it is unclear how this weight fits into the Roman weight-system.

A corroded and abraded cast lead object - possibly a Roman steelyard weight. A corroded and abraded cast lead object - probably a Roman steelyard weight. The object is broadly circular in plan with a large, corroded iron loop (L.: 23.3mm) off centre on its upper surface. The weight tapers to a broadly oval base (33.2 by 25.7mm); the sides taper to the short ends, while the long sides have been squashed. The base is flat enough for the weight to stand. The surface is now a light-grey/white colour with numerous scratches, dents and areas of cracking. Given its current mass it is unclear how this weight fits into the Roman weight-system.

A corroded cast lead object - possibly a 'homemade' Roman weight. The object is broadly teardrop shaped with a rounded end. It tapers towards the other end which features a crude transverse groove, possibly for suspension. One surface is domed while the other is flat; the object has a semicircular cross-section. The surface is now a light-grey/white colour with numerous scratches and dents. This object's current mass bears no clear relationship to the Roman weight-system, but was found in the vicinity of Roman steelyard weights.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A damaged and incomplete cast copper-alloy post-medieval spoon consisting of most of the bowl and part of the handle (c. 17th century AD). Little of the handle now survives; the old break reveals a square cross-section. There is a concave depression on the lower surface at the junction of handle and bowl. The bowl was fig shaped but has suffered losses to one side and along the tip. It has a flattened rim all around. It has received numerous strikes that have resulted in the base being pushed upwards near the centre, as well as the losses mentioned and abrasions at the tip. The spoon …

A copper-alloy sheet binding, sub-circular in plan, of probable post-medieval date. The piece has suffered a longitudinal crack but it has only been slightly distorted in plan. The thin strip is flat at one end and cusped on the other other giving it the superficial appearance of a crown. The cusping is formed of triangles each with small semicircular cusps. An upper zone from just below the cusps is delineated by a double longitudinally incised line; the area below is plain, as is the internal surface. The upper zone is decorated with punched curvilinear decoration. Above the longitu…
