A probable cast copper-alloy element from a knife of medieval to post-medieval date. The object is convex, sub-rectangular in plan and sub-trapezoidal in profile. The corners are truncated and slightly rounded. The highest surface features a slot in the shape of a rectangle with rounded corners (9.65 x 4.3mm). Although reminiscent of early-medieval pommels in shape the object shows no obvious means of attachment and seems therefore unlikely as a terminal. It is suggested that it could have been a hilt plate or guard between the blade and handle of a knife. The metal is largely mid-gre…

Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded, plain copper-alloy rivet-like object which might have been used to hold repairs to a vessel in place. It is sub-oval in plan with a possibly break giving a broadly straight edge to one side. On the lower surface there is an integral protruding prong towards this edge whose terminal protrudes to one side and is flattened at the base. Rolled sheet rivets replaced the earlier folded sheet rivets in pot repairs from the late 15th - 16th centuries (Egan 2005, 101) suggesting a possible late medieval to post-medieval date for this piece. It is of a red-brown metal with patches o…

The spindle whorl is 7.9mm thick and weighs 16.01g. It has been pointed out that the weight of a spindle whorl is suggestive of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3-5 grams) being used for spinning cotton …
