A complete cast copper-alloy spherical animal bell (crotal) of post-medieval date. The bell comprises two hemispherical domes with a raised circumferential join. The upper hemisphere has two sub-circular sound holes with a rectangular loop projecting from the top between them. The loop is formed of an angular U-shaped bar of square cross-section and is 9.8 mm high, 11.3 wiide and 4.2mm thick. The curve of the bell continues under the loop aperture suggesting it was made using a detachable 'sprue-piece'; this method was introduced in the 17th century. The lower hemisphere has a long, w…

Three fragments of a Post Medieval copper alloy cast spherical (crotal) bell dating to c1600 - 1850. The bell would have comprised two hemispherical domes with a raised circumferential join. The upper hemisphere would have had two circular sound holes with a rectangular suspension loop projecting from the top between them. The lower hemisphere would have had a long, wide sound slit with circular sound holes at either end. The two smaller pieces come from the upper hemisphere and the larger piece comprises a small section of the upper hemisphere from the edge of one of the sound hol…

A cast copper-alloy spherical animal ('crotal') bell of post-medieval date (c. 17th century AD). The sub-rectangular suspension loop at the top is 6.9mm in length. The curve of the bell continues under the loop suggesting it was made using the detachable sprue-piece method developed in the 17th century. The upper and lower hemispheres are divided by a prominent horizontal circumferential rib. At either side of the suspension loop, about halfway down the side of the upper hemisphere, is a circular sound hole. Across the lower hemisphere is a rectangular sound slot opening into a circul…

The sound holes are recessed on the outer surface and measure c. 5/6mm in diameter. The upper hemisphere is plain. The suspension loop has a angled top and the curve of the bell continues through the opening suggesting it was made using the detachable sprue-piece casting method developed in the 17th century.
