Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A circular cast lead alloy weight of uncertain date with a trapezoidal cross section. A 'D' is stamped on one face and there is an incised line on the other. It is 23.8mm in diametre, 6.6mm in thicknes and weighs 27.82g. 0.98 ounces. Plain weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards for a wide variety of uses and are hard to date precisely. This example is about an ounce in the avoirdupois system in use since the Medieval period suggesting a late Medieval - Post Medieval date.

A probable lead alloy fragment of a Post Medieval to Modern toy gun. The object is triangular in plan with curving sides and a flattened point. The point end is closed but the opposite end is open and was probably attached to the wooden section of the toy gun. Both faces have moulded decoration showing what appears to be leaves and/or flowers within a border of raised lines. There is a lobed knop projecting down from one of the sides. It is likely to be the butt from a toy gun. It measures 52.4mm in length, 26.7mm in width, 11.8mm in thickness and weighs 30.4g.

Post Medieval copper alloy token farthing of 'A merchant of the staple of England'. This is a known type but the name and location of the issuer is unknown, 1652-1670 AD; Williamson (1891:1427), Without Names of Towns, Issuers or Initials, 92. See Thompson and Dickinson (2011, pl. 64) no. 9380 Because the issuer is uncertain the findspot is particular significant as it may help the issuing area to be narrowed down. Cast copper alloy side plate from the hilt of a knife. The plate is sub-rectangular in shape. There is a break at one end, but the rest of the plate remains intact and in fairly good condition. The reverse has a raised ridge running along the outside edge, creating a central slot to hoild the tang of the knife, but is otherwise undecorated. The upper face has a central recessed panel with raised letters within it. These are difficult to decipher and this task is made more difficult because the first part of the inscription is missing due to the break. They appear to say [...]MAKE YOUr…

Post medieval lead cloth seal, issued during the reign of Queen Anne. Part of a four-disc seal from the series featuring a monarch's head. It is comprised of four discs in two conjoined pairs, joined in the centre with a rectangular tab. The seal is bent in the centre at the tab so the pairs of disks are back to back. Post Medieval lead cloth seal, of two disk type. Only one disk now survives with the projecting attachment on the back. The second disk and connecting strip has been lost or broken away and the break is worn. The front has a raised design of a large letter A flanked with annulets.
