Object type: THIMBLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Post Medieval copper alloy thimble formed by soldering copper alloy sheet into a long, slightly tapering cylinder with a separate domed top. The top and a part of the side are missing due to an old, very irregular break and the side has split along the seam, it is squashed inwards slightly at the base. The soldered seam is visible around the top and on the side. The sides are decorated with an irregular hand incised grid of lines leaving a strap work pattern, of two lozenges alternating with two pointed ovals, in reserve. There is a plain ring at the base. It is now 18.8mm by 15.3mm a…

Post Medieval, 17th century, cast copper alloy openwork mount with integral attachment spikes. The mount is flat and shaped into four lobes, two large pointed oval lobes alternating with two smaller circular lobes. The tip of one of the pointed oval lobes is lost, possibly to damage. The lobes have circular holes in the centre and there is a further hole in the centre of the mount; the holes in the pointed oval lobes join the central hole while those in the circular lobes are connected to it by an indent on the front. On the back are two integral spikes, one is complete and bent inwar…

Post Medieval, 17th century, cast copper-alloy circular bridle boss. The boss is a hollow hemisphere, with an openwork design and a flat border around the edge. A break to one side has removed part of the border and one of the pair of rivet holes. The boss has a raised central knop, around which is the openwork main body, consisting of slim curving arms. The less worn arms are decorated with a scale like patten of raised semi-circles running down each arm and incised lines down their inner sides which continue at the base to meet the base of the next arm. Around this is a narrow rop…

Post Medieval copper alloy double-looped oval buckle with an iron pin and separate strap-plate. The loops form one continuous oval outer frame and the outer sides of the loops are slightly widened. The outer edge is rounded and the inner edge and back flat and plain. The integral strap bar is plain. The iron pin is highly corroded but remains in situ. The strap plate is formed of a thin rectangular strip of copper alloy sheet bent in half around the central bar. Post Medieval copper alloy double looped buckle. The frame is broadly rectangular in plan with the outer edges widening in width to pointed projections, forming triangular ends. The strap bar has a lobed knop at either end. Remains of iron corrosion on the strap suggests the pin, now missing, could have been made of iron. It measures 47.3mm in length, 23.7mm in width, 2.1mm in thickness and weighs 3.7g. Whitehead (2003; 82) illustrates a similar example with a wider frame, no. 512, which is dated 1250-1700 AD.
