An incomplete probably Post-Medieval (1500-1700) openwork probable strap distributor with domed centre boss. It is missing just less than half. Measures 29.28x29.04x8.13mm and weighs 6.7g. The plate around the centre boss (c.12mm diameter) is more or less circular in shape with an oval perforation in each quarter (although only two of these remain intact). Between each quarter protrudes a semi-circular lug (again, only two survive) with a rivet hole c.3mm in diameter just below (three rivet holes survive). The plate is flat (2.68mm thick) though hollowed to the reverse behind the ce…

Probably a strap fitting of cast copper alloy, bent over at one end. One end has a rectangular strip, bent over to form a crude hook; it is rectangular in section and appears complete. Below this hook is a raised collar on the front below which the object widens slightly before tapering in gradually and ending in a expanded oval knop at the foot. This lower section, the collar and below, is D shaped in section with a convex front and slightly concave back in the centre. The length is 47.5mm, the width is 8.8mm, and thickness is 3.8mm. The weight is 7.52 grams. It is probably Post m…

Cast copper alloy hooked clasp with openwork design. This is the hooked section of a two part clasp. The main plate is heart shaped with a trefoil opening in the centre. At the top projects a rounded knop containing the residue of an iron rivet in the centre. The lower point of the heart extends downwards and continues into a forward facing blunt hook. The top of the hook is flanked by projecting rounded knops with the residue of a second iron rivet between them. There is evidence of white metal coating, probably tinning. Length 55.3mm, width 21.7mm. Weight 8.49 grams. It is ide…

Post Medieval cast copper alloy sword belt fitting. It is roughly foliate in form, with incised decoration forming a leaf pattern. It has a trefoil shaped terminal at one end below which it narrows before widening to rounded shoulders about a third of the way down from which it tapers to the other end where there are two lugs flanking a forward projecting hook. The hook is oval in cross section and the terminal is lost to an old break. There are two circular fixing holes containing iron corrosion, one near the trefoil terminal and one above the hook. It is 52.6mm long, 22.6mm w…

Post-Medieval copper alloy snake shaped strap-fitting and ring. The S shaped fitting has a naturalistically modelled reptilian or bird like head at both ends, a double bar running around the middle of the fitting in low relief with further curvilinear features to either side; the details of which are worn. It is worn but there maybe traces of scales or decoration behind one head. The tip of one of the snakes head is touching the central part of its body and this has allowed for the retention of a ring. This is plain with a circular section and has a depression where the loop has rubbed…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy four-way strap junction of post-medieval date. The piece is formed of four circular loops arranged around a central sqaure; one of the loops has broken through. The loops curve into the square's field. The central element is recessed apart from a central pellet, perhaps to take in inlay that has now been lost. While the upper surface is moulded the lower surface is flat. The piece has a red/brown colour with patches of light-green and off-white corrosion product. This, the form and finish, suggest a date for this piece perhaps in the 17th or 18th ce…

One half of a Post-medieval cast copper-alloy two-part sword-belt toggle-clasp dating from the 16th to 17 century. Toggle-clasps have two sections which lock together, one with an eye and the other with a toggle-bar; this artefact is the section with a toggle-bar. The piece has a main plate with a bar extending from one end on the front of which is an integral D-shaped plate which therefore sits forward of the main plate and acted as a the toggle. The main plate has a rounded end adjacent to the the bar and toggle then slightly concave sides then a slightly expanded end opposite the b…

A copper-alloy Post-medieval strap fitting / belt hanger, dating to AD 1500 - 1700. The mount comprises a pointed oval, slightly convex at the front and concave at the back. The main body has two circular rivet holes on its central axis, each with an internal diameter of c. 2mm; one hole is at the centre while the other is c. 9mm from the moulded end. One end terminates in a rounded knop. The other end extends to an integral hook that curves around to touch the back of the fitting. Through this loop there is a seperate copper aloy ring, 13.2mm in diameter. The ring is flat and broa…

A corroded fragment from a cast copper-alloy hooked mount of post-medieval date. The fragment consists of the lower part of the mount, including the hook and the lower part below a rivet hole. Within this lower rivet hole corroded remains of an iron rivet. The sides of the mount are scalloped with rounded protrusions to the sides. The inward-turning hook has been bent slightly to one side as a result of old damage. The metal has corroded to a red-brown colour with larges areas of light-green and off-white corrosion product.

A corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy hooked mount of post-medieval date. The mount is sub-trapezoidal in plan with a cusped upper edge. It tapers towards the hook (now missing), widening slightly just above the hook; the mount has broken as the hook begins. The mount is broadly flat with slight bevelling on its upper surface. It features two iron rivets, one towards the upper edge, the other just below the centre of the plate. Much of the upper rivet survives corroded in place. The copper alloy is covered in an off-white corrosion product over a mid-green metal. Comparable hook…

A post-medieval copper-alloy hooked mount. The central portion of the mount is sub-oval in plan and domed, with a hollow underside. It tapers towards the hook and is faceted with a flattened top and bevelled sides.  Extending upwards from the top is rounded lobe which has a central rivet hole (with an iron rivet still in situ), a transverse ridge at its base and a long, rounded projection at the top. At the base of the mount is a transverse groove above a backward-facing hook. There is a further, this time copper-alloy and integral, rivet and a rove just above the groove which would …

A copper-alloy Post Medieval hooked clasp sword belt fitting dating to 1500 to 1650. The fitting is the 'eye' and not the 'hook'. The body of the fitting would have been sub-rectangular but has two breaks one in each corner, the piece tapers into the 'eye' loop by a double moulded crescent. The outer face is decorated with two raised, rounded domes (now corroded) placed above the rivets. There are two rivet holes on the reverse both are encrusted with iron corrosion. Medieval to post Medieval cast copper alloy probable swivel. The item consists of a central barrel like part with incised decoration with a cast circular hoop for attachment at each end. Although seemingly formed of two halves with a seam running around the middle of the barrel part there is presently no movement. The exact use of the item is uncertain and it is therefore classified broadly as a strap fitting. The fitting has been dated c.1400-1700.

Incomplete cast copper alloy hooked fitting of probable post Medieval date (c.1600-1700). The fitting has a flat oval body with a tapered hook folded under at one end and a broken attachment loop at the other end. The oval plate has ferrous corrosion in the centre of the upper surface and along the base of the underside which probably is probably the remains of an iron rivet. There is no discernible surface decoration. The hook possibly formed part of a sword belt and rough parallels can be found in 'Hooked Clasps & Eyes' by Brian Read, p.222.

A fragment of a cast copper alloy strap fitting for a sword belt, dating to the Post-Medieval period. The fragment consists of the lower part of a shield-shaped plate with concaved sides and a rounded base with the stub of a hook projecting from the centre. The front face of the plate is decorated with a symmetrical foliage design in moulded relief. The design vaguely resembles leaves of the vine. The reverse is plain and undecorated. This type of fitting would have been attached to a scabbard strap. Read (2008: 219, no. 790) illustrates a similar mount which he dates to the 16th or 1…
