An incomplete curved copper alloy handle for a vessel, probably dating to the post-medieval period, however it has not yet been directly paralleled and an earlier date cannot be ruled out. The handle is triangular in cross section with a slghtly convex curved inner face and ridge running down the centre of the upper face. It narrows from the break at one end to the break at the other. At the bottom thinner end there is a raised section on the front that may have been part of the decoration or indicate the start of the terminal. The curve of this fragment can give an indication as to t…

A coin hoard of four copper alloy cartwheel pennies of George III, Birmingham mint second issue, dated 1797 (Spink p.417 no.3777). Probably a chance purse loss. One penny has been deliberately bent in two places and drilled through. As this modified coin was found in a group with other pennies, suggested to be a purse loss, it can be inferred that, despite the modification, the coin would still have been an accepted item of tender. There are rough breaks on both ends, one ot a c30 degree angle, the other transverse. The upper surface has three parallel but not equidistant (two on one side being closer together), longitudinal grooves but is otherwise undecorated.. When viewed from the side the handle has a very slight downward curvature which may be due to the break. The handle tapers very slightly from 24.6mm to 23.2mm …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A total of 233 pieces of lead ball shot, brought in for recording in batches of 125, 91 and 17 respectively, but here amalgamated as from the same findspot. A large number (100) have a weight of 11g +/- 1.5g, with a second main group (31) around 32g +/- 1.5g. This suggests a predominant use of pistol shot, with a notable presence of musket shot according to the main calibre divisions (Foard and Morris 2012, 121). If Hardings (2012) wider brackets are used there are 120 of 7-16 grams interpreted as pistol and 43 of 30-48 grams. Equally notable is an absence of much shot of intermediate…
