Object type: CORE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
2 cores and a core fragment. One shows clear evidence of neat parallel bladelet removals, the other is more ambigious and could have had blade or flake removals. The fragment has more irregular multi-platform work. This reflects the different stages of flint work present here (Mesolithic-Early Neolithic and Bronze Age). The two cores show evidence of working down to the nub extracting small flakes. The pieces vary from baige, to grey to black. The remaining cortex indcate pebble flint. The bladelet core weighs 11.78 grams, the second core weights 13.21 grams and a combined weight for …

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A Mesolithic blade fragment. The blade is broken above the distal end so there is no visible striking platform or bulb of percussion on the ventral face. The dorsal face has two paralell arises. The blade has a light grey patina on the surface, at the break the patina is a mid brown. The blade fragment is 19.25 mm in length, 11.75 mm wide and weighs 0.65 grams.

Object type: MICROLITH
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Probable Microlith of later Mesolithic date. The piece has a sharp triangular point with an irregular, accidental, break at the wide end. The piece is made from the centre of a tertiary blade with the point towards the proximal end and a broken distal end. The dorsal face is highly arched with evidence for previous removals. There is short, scalar to sub-parallel abrupt to semi-abrupt retouch around the tip of the point and down both sides as far as the break. The flint is dark grey with paler mottling. It is 23.2mm long, 11.3mm wide and 3.6mm thick; it weighs 1.08.

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Part of a probably Mesolithic flint blade, probably dating to the period c.9000-4000BC. It is a secondary piece with one small patch of pebble cortex surviving near its proximal end. The artefact is rectangular with a triangular cross section. The dorsal face has two negative blade scars from previous removal. One of the mesal edges have areas of chipping. There is a snap at the proximal end, thus removing the striking platform and bulb of percussion. The flint is a medium grey with areas of mottled white. The pebble cortex is a medium brown and orange colour.
The lithic is 21.8mm …

Object type: MACE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete perforated cobble "mace head" or pebble hammer of probable Mesolithic to Neolithic date. The mace head is a well rounded oblong in plan, sub-rectangular in profile and sub-oval in cross-section with three sides that have a rounded central ridge and rounded corners. It may have been a beach pebble that had a natural hole which was then exploited to create the mace.
The majority of the object is covered in thick, natural, original cortext but it has been broken and worked on two adjoining sides, exposing the flint. The side with the flint exposed completely has a straig…

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A retouched flint flake of Mesolithic to Neolithic date (c. 9000-2350 BC) with evidence of light fire damage. The piece is broadly triangular in shape, and is a tertiary flake . The dorsal surface, has three negative parallel flake scars. The ventral surface, has a small bulb of percussion at the proximal end with a bulbar scar and widely spaced conchoidal ripple marks indicating this piece was struck off at 180 degrees to the previous removals. The proximal end has short scaled semi-abrupt retouch running a third of the way along its length, it is probable that this would have contin…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A group of twenty six pieces of Mesolithic flint and chert debitage in the form of blades and bladelets, dating to the period c. 9000-2350 BC.
The majority of pieces have been struck off a tertiary flake with no evidence of cortex remaining. However three pieces have been struck off a secondary flake, retaining between 5 and 20% of their cortex. The dorsal faces on all pieces exhibit negative flake scars, with the majority of the assembalge only having only two (5 pieces have three or more negative flake scars). The ventral faces all exhibit a low diffuse bulb of percussion with we…

A collection of 8 flakes of flint debitage, part of a larger group (see also: SOM-16F496; SOM-18BA22), of largely blade technology and of probable Mesolithic date, c. 9000-4000 BC.
Of the flakes four are secondary and four tertiary, with cortex surviving on flake A1 (Distal end, dorsal face: c. 10-15%, Ventral face: c .5-10%), A2 (Distal end, dorsal face: c. 10%), A3 (Proximal end, left edge, dorsal face: c.

Five flakes of chert debitage, part of a larger group of debitage, see also: SOM-16F496; SOM-1763D4. A largely blade based technology of proabable Mesolithic date, c. 9000-4000 BC.
All five flakes are of a dark red, opaque chert, three being tertiary, with no surviving cortex and the other two being secondary, with flake A1 exhibiting cortex on both the Dorsal and ventral face at the proximal end (c. 5-10%), and flake A2 exhibiting cortex (c. 10-15%) at the distal end of the dorsal face only. Bulbs of percussion survive on flakes A1 and B1, the latter exhibiting a bulbar scar, all …

Two flint cores of probable Mesolithc to Neolithic date (c. 6000 - 3500 BC).
1. The core exhibits at least four striking platforms and exhibits at least 13 negative flake scars from previous blade and flake removal. The flint is a dark semi-translucent grey colour, with some cloudy repatination and iron staining.
It measures 31.81mm in length, 38.86mm in width, is 24.91mm thick and weighs 42.46g.
2. A fragment of a second core was found at a later date. It is one side of a possibly conical core, the other side and platform are damaged with at least 50% probably missing. Again…

Three fragments of flint cores. Total weight: 65.48g.
1. Blade core with long parallel removals from one end, c.20% cortex on one face at distal end, mid to pale grey, 30.41 grams.
2. Blade core with long parallel removals form one end, break at the distal end, c.5% cortex on dorsal face, mid grey flint with pale mottling, 14.20 grams.
3. Remains of a core, the removal scars are mostly for small flakes but there are also many mis-hits at the proximal end on the dorsal face and distal end on the ventral face. This suggests an attempt to use the core down to the smallest fragment,…

One incomplete and one complete microlith:
Incomplete microlith, small blade with a deliberate notch made half way down the right edge on the ventral face. The notch would have divided the bulb (microburin) from the distal end. Dark grey flint with paler mottling, 0.81 grams.
Piece from the centre of a larger blade, long parallel removals on the dorsal face. The edges which run across the blade are retouched with abrupt semi-parallel and scalar retouch along both edges. Pale grey flint with darker areas, 1.51 grams.
