Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy artefact, probably a strap fitting such as a strap union, or perhaps a harness fitting or mount. It probably dates from the Iron Age or Roman period, about 800 BC - AD 100. The object is incomplete, but appears to have been symetrical. It consists of a pair of opposed triangular loops, both springing from a central block. The block is square in profile, but narrow when viwed from the front, rather like a square collar. It is decorated with incised border lines on the front, upper and lower faces. Projecting from the back of the central element is a circular sectioned…

Cast copper alloy handle for a folding knife. There is a collar around the other end with a spherical knop projecting from its outer side and two other spherical knops evenly spaced along the outer edge. Next to the collar the bar is much wider and has a central slot for the knife. There is a rivet hole through the metal, with an iron rivet through it creating a hinge for the knife. Inside the split and held by the rivet there …

A cast copper-alloy ring possibly of Iron Age date to early Roman date. The ring is broadly circular with a circular cross section. The ring has a dark-olive green patina with occasional pitting. The central hole is slightly off-centre or worn, so one side of the ring is thicker and wider (4.29mm, 4.16mm compared to 3.42mm, and 3.46mm). The ring is undecorated. It is 17.26mm in diameter, and weighs 3.94mm. While such a plain item is hard to date specifically. The patina suggests an Iron Age date, although a Roman date cannot be ruled out, Such rings might have been associated wit…

Upper part of the bow and head of a Late Iron Age cast copper alloy birdlip type brooch. The lower part of the bow, pin, foot and catchplate are missing. It the top of the remaining section the bow is oval with a concave back. This probably formed the trumpet shaped head with a spring held in the concave section, although the attachment is lost. The edges of this oval head are damaged, particularly around the lower edges and it may have been larger originally. From this oval top the bow rises at 90 degrees before bending over abruptly and running relatively straight to the foot. In…

An incomplete Iron Age La Tene IBa type brooch dating to the period c.400 - 275 BC. The majority of the brooch survives it missing only its head and integral sprung pin. The brooch is broken at the head with only a small part of the circular cross sectioned wire of the spring remaining running vertically down for c.2mm before arching steeply upwards from the head into the bow. Iron corrosion around this area suggests there may have been an iron cross bar. The bow expands into a D-shaped cross section with a flat back and convex front. Despite being mostly abraded smooth there are f…

A Late Iron Age/early Roman (AD20-80) copper-alloy Colchester two-piece brooch, incompletein so far as it is missing the elements of its catch-plate, and much of its pin. The wings are short, flat and rectangular. Behind the wings is a hook that curves upwards to retain the axis bar, and, above this, an integral hook curved back on itself to retain the chord. The spring mechanism survives intact, around its axis bar, the chord retained within the rearward hook. There are two coils to each side; on one side the innermost coil develops into the pin which has been truncated after only c.…

Copper alloy ring. The ring is circular in section. Two transverse grooves are just visible aournd the outside. It has an outer diameter of 17mm and an inner diameter of 11mm. The thickness of the ring ranges from 4mm at its thickest, to 3mm at its thinnest. Although cast copper alloy beads with similar transverse grooves are known from the Bronze Age to Roman periods, the distinct and apparently deliberate difference between the two sides may suggest this is a suspension or harness loop which has been worn through use, rather than an Iron Age bead.

Silver Iron Age unit. Very worn. Probably Tinnocommios. Obv: Head facing right. TINCO Rev: Eagle with wings spread standing on snake. Tincommios was joint ruler of the Atrebates kingdom, firstly with his father, Commios the Younger, and later with his younger brother, Eppilus. Tincommios chose to rule the southern sections of the kingdom, which proved to be a mistake as the town of Calleva (Silchester) under his brothers rule became recognised by the Romans as the main centre of Artebatum power. Eppilus overthrew his brother from power in BC 7, and Tincommios fled to Rome to p…

The object is very slightly curved in profile. It has a mid-green smooth patina with small patches of lighter corrosion product.

A damaged and incomplete Late Iron Age/Early Roman cast copper-alloy brooch, probably best classified as being of the strip bow type. The brooch has a rectangular bow (W.: 11.0mm). The head is the widest point (11.9mm) and features a central removal (pin slot) and a cylinder formed by rolling the head forward on itself, as is the case for this type. Retained within the slot, looped around the axis bar, is the head of the pin, the rest of which is otherwise missing. The flat bow is decorated with low transverse ridges. Some of these rows are decorated with circular punches. Below the b…
