Post Medieval copper alloy token farthing minted for William Smith of Steyning, Sussex in 1667. Williamson Vol 3. p.1182, Sussex No.165. William Smith was a mercer. There is a reference, in Sussex Archaeological Collections 19 p.95, to a William Smith of Steyning who had an estate worth £20 seized by parliment in 1655 because the owner was either a Royalist or a Catholic (the ordnance covered both). This may or may not be the same person as issued the tokens but Williamson suggests it is.

A broken cast copper-alloy pin with spherical filigree head of early post-medieval date (c. 16th century AD). The pin shaft is circular in cross section with a spherical knop at one end which projects just beyond the pin head. The other end is bent through 45 degrees and broken just below the head. The remainer is 22.1mm long by 1.9mm in diameter. The whole piece weighs 1.94 grams. The broken bowl from a cast copper-alloy 17th-century post-medieval spoon. The handle and the majority of the bowl are missing, both from old breaks. The handle is rectangular in cross-section; on the lower surface it tapers to a point at its junction with the bowl. The surviving section of the bowl is shallow and has been bent upwards at the extant terminal, with breaks to each side. A corroded fragment from a cast copper-alloy hooked mount of post-medieval date. The fragment consists of the lower part of the mount, including the hook and the lower part below a rivet hole. Within this lower rivet hole corroded remains of an iron rivet. The sides of the mount are scalloped with rounded protrusions to the sides. The inward-turning hook has been bent slightly to one side as a result of old damage. The metal has corroded to a red-brown colour with larges areas of light-green and off-white corrosion product.

It is 21.20mm in diameter, 1.85 mm thick and weighs 4.8 grams. Lead tokens were locally made and had a wide variety of uses; they are therefore hard to date precisely but those with initials are thought to be Post Medieval in date, 1500-1850 AD.

The token has a raised design on one side of the initials J and F seperated by a raised pellet with 12 above and possibly bls (or s19 upside down) below. The reverse is blank. The token measures 19.9mm in diameter, 3.1mm thick, and weighs 7.66 grams. Lead tokens were locally made and had a wide variety of uses; they are therefore hard to date precisely but those with initals are thought to be Post Medieval in date. The reverse appears to have a raised pellet towards one edge but this could possibly be a casting flaw. The token measures 18.2 mm in diameter, 1.9 mm thick, and weighs 3.84 grams. Lead tokens were locally made and had a wide variety of uses; they are therefore hard to date precisely but those with initials are thought to be Post Medieval in date.

Cast copper-alloy front of a composite hollow button. The front is hemispherical with a central pellet at the top surrounded by an incised design of a star or sun with a cenral circle with eight rays or points projecting from it and multiple parallel lines of hatching between each ray. It is 13.7mm in diameter; 6.1mm tall and weighs 2.17 grams. An identical example is illustrated in Read (2005:73, no.294) from south Somerset which he dates to the 17th to 18th century AD.

Cast lead circular unifaced token. The obverse of the token is decorated with the raised initials G over GF or GE. The reverse is blank. The token is 24.8mm in diameter, 2.33mm thick and weighs 6.84 grams. Tokens with simple designs were very easy to make, had a range of uses and continued in use for a long period. The arrangement of initials in this format was common in 17th century for married couples, the upper initial indicated the surname and the lower initials the husband and wives first names, suggesting this token dates to that time.

A lead token of Post-Medieval date. Weight 57.01g (0.1257pounds or 2.0110 ounces), diameter 33.21mm, thickness 7.61mm. The upper surface of the artefact is decorated with a raised symbol, possibly two letters joined together which could be CH or more likely HD. It seems that the symbol was a HD, where the vertical of the 'D' was also the right-hand vertical of the 'H' however it must be noted that the lower part of the letters, if this is what they are, have been worn or scraped away leaving just a faint mark visible today. A fragment of a post-Medieval skillet handle (1679-1717 AD). The fragment is sub-rectangular in plan, flat on the upper face and convex on the underside ('D'-shaped in cross-section). A damaged and incomplete cast copper-alloy post-medieval spoon consisting of most of the bowl and part of the handle (c. 17th century AD). Little of the handle now survives; the old break reveals a square cross-section. There is a concave depression on the lower surface at the junction of handle and bowl. The bowl was fig shaped but has suffered losses to one side and along the tip. It has a flattened rim all around. Post Medieval copper alloy double looped buckle. The frame is broadly rectangular in plan with the outer edges widening in width to pointed projections, forming triangular ends. The strap bar has a lobed knop at either end. Remains of iron corrosion on the strap suggests the pin, now missing, could have been made of iron. It measures 47.3mm in length, 23.7mm in width, 2.1mm in thickness and weighs 3.7g. Whitehead (2003; 82) illustrates a similar example with a wider frame, no. 512, which is dated 1250-1700 AD.

Post Medieval cast, copper alloy double-looped buckle. The pin survives in part and is a copper alloy strip bent around the strap bar, broken towards the tip which is now lost. The loops of the frame are sub oval and the strap bar is recessed. It measures 35.8mm in length, 25.9mm in width and 3.4mm in thickness. It weighs 6.7g. Whitehead (2003; 305), number 305, is a similar example, dated 1500-1650 AD.

Post Medieval fragment of a copper alloy cast leg from a cooking vessel. The fragment is 'D'-shaped in section with a notched curved outer edge created by five ribs that run down the front. It measures 57.3mm in length, 46.6mm in width, 23.6mm in thickness and weighs 86.82g. Butler, Green and Booth (2003; 4) suggests that legs such as these were widespread by the 17th century.

A circular cast lead alloy weight of uncertain date with a trapezoidal cross section. A 'D' is stamped on one face and there is an incised line on the other. It is 23.8mm in diametre, 6.6mm in thicknes and weighs 27.82g. 0.98 ounces. Plain weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards for a wide variety of uses and are hard to date precisely. This example is about an ounce in the avoirdupois system in use since the Medieval period suggesting a late Medieval - Post Medieval date.

A probable lead alloy fragment of a Post Medieval to Modern toy gun. The object is triangular in plan with curving sides and a flattened point. The point end is closed but the opposite end is open and was probably attached to the wooden section of the toy gun. Both faces have moulded decoration showing what appears to be leaves and/or flowers within a border of raised lines. There is a lobed knop projecting down from one of the sides. It is likely to be the butt from a toy gun. It measures 52.4mm in length, 26.7mm in width, 11.8mm in thickness and weighs 30.4g.
