A corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy post-medieval plain double-looped buckle frame. The frame is missing one of its loops after an old break at the pin bar. The surviving loop is trapezoidal, with a flat lower surface and an upper surface which is bevelled externally. This gives the frame a triangular cross-section, while the pin bar is semi-circular in section. There is a knopped protrusion at each end of the pin bar. Traces of orange corrosion product at one end of the pin bar suggest that the pin may have been made of iron. The frame has a dark-grey surface where it survive…

A corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame of medieval to early post-medieval date. The frame was formed of two conjoined ovals such that the sides incurve. The frame is bevelled both internally and externally on the upper surface, the latter more shallowly; the lower surface is flat. The pin bar thus has a trapezoidal cross-section. The pin is now largely missing, apart from the orange/brown corroded mass, the remnant of the iron pin. The buckle frame has a variable mid-green colour but is mostly covered in off-white corrosion product. Buckles of this size…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy post-medieval shoe or knee buckle. The buckle is rectangular in plan with rounded corners. It is bevelled externally on the upper surface and rabetted at the outer edge. The bevelling is echoed internally on the lower surface. There is a elongated 'C'-shaped moulding on the upper surface along the longer sides and extending into the internal side of the outer edge, terminating in a curl. Central expansions on the longer sides have been drilled to take the separate pin bar. This latter survives in situ; being made of iron it is highly corroded. There a…

Post medieval cast copper alloy double loop buckle frame. The frame has two oval loops with slightly widened outer edges. The front and back are bevelled and the front is decorated with a raised rim around the inner side of the loops and raised foliate patterns (the pattern is discribed by Whitehead (see below) as vine scroll). There are traces of a black lacquer around the patten. The strap bar is narrowed and recessed. It is very bent and now 45.9mm long, 31.3mm wide, 2.8mm thick and weighs 6.34 grams. Whitehead (2003) illustrates a similar buckle (page 68, No.423) whi…

Post Medieval copper alloy double-looped oval buckle with an iron pin and separate strap-plate. The loops form one continuous oval outer frame and the outer sides of the loops are slightly widened. The outer edge is rounded and the inner edge and back flat and plain. The integral strap bar is plain. The iron pin is highly corroded but remains in situ. The strap plate is formed of a thin rectangular strip of copper alloy sheet bent in half around the central bar. It has a rectangular slot at the fold for the pin and both sides are borken with irregular breaks. It is 19mm long, 21.1mm i…

Post Medieval copper alloy double looped buckle. The frame is broadly rectangular in plan with the outer edges widening in width to pointed projections, forming triangular ends. The strap bar has a lobed knop at either end. Remains of iron corrosion on the strap suggests the pin, now missing, could have been made of iron. It measures 47.3mm in length, 23.7mm in width, 2.1mm in thickness and weighs 3.7g. Whitehead (2003; 82) illustrates a similar example with a wider frame, no. 512, which is dated 1250-1700 AD.

Post Medieval cast, copper alloy double-looped buckle. The pin survives in part and is a copper alloy strip bent around the strap bar, broken towards the tip which is now lost. The loops of the frame are sub oval and the strap bar is recessed. It measures 35.8mm in length, 25.9mm in width and 3.4mm in thickness. It weighs 6.7g. Whitehead (2003; 305), number 305, is a similar example, dated 1500-1650 AD.

The chape is 'D-shaped' with the centre of the curve projecting into an elongated knop which has a raised stud at the end. It is a Whitehead (2003; 96) type I. An incomplete cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle of post-medieval date, now missing its pin. The buckle is sub-rectangular in form, effectively a rectangle with the corners cut off; one of the outer edges is not straight. The buckle is flat and plain and has corroded to a red-brown colour overlain by patches of light green corrosion product. Such a buckle can plausibly be dated to the 17th century, although a slightly later date cannot be ruled out (cf. Griffiths et al., 215; ref. 3001).

A fragment from a cast copper-alloy post-medieval buckle, probably a shoe buckle: it bowes. The frame would have been rectangular with rounded corners; less than half of the buckle remains. The pin, now missing, would have been joined to the frame at two centrally drilled holes along its width; half of one of the holes is present on the fragment. The frame is raised around the spindle hole. The buckle is moulded on its upper surface, with a slightly rebated border. One loop of the buckle is rounded, with two projecting lobed knops, top and bottom, and the other half is rectangular, with five equally-spaced transverse notches on the outer edge which form six lobed knops. Medieval or post-medieval cast copper-alloy double-loop buckle frame. The frame has two oval loops which are D-shaped in section with flat backs and slightly widened outer edges. The strap bar is narrowed. The pin is missing but there are traces of iron corrosion on the strap bar and one loop. The frame is 23.0mm long, 18.8mm wide and 2.5mm thick, it weighs 1.74 grams. A similar example is illustrated in Margeson (1993:30, no.164) from a 17th century context , although with an incised line for a pin rest in the centre of each loop, it is likely similar simple forms were in use …

A cast copper-alloy rectangular single-looped buckle of medieval to post-medieval date (c. AD 1400-1700). The buckle's rectangular frame has rounded corners on the outer edge. It is square in cross-section with some rounding to the outer edge. Looped in situ is a thick wire pin which has corroded in the same manner as the frame. The buckle's form is not diagnostic hence the large date range offered.

An incomplete post-medieval cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame. Around a half of one of the buckle's loops has been broken away following old damage, with the outer edge gone completely and the sides surviving to differing extents above and below. The pin is also missing. The remaining oval loop is curved in cross-section due to a central recess between the sides of the buckle on the back. This is presumably a result of casting in an open, one-piece mould, whereby the metal has cooled and contracted. At the centre of the outer edge of the complete loop is an angled lobed kn…

Incomplete cast copper alloy post medieval double loop buckle frame. 28.3mm long, 27.1mm wide, 2.5mm thick and 3.4 grams in weight. One loop has gone almost completely from old breaks. The other is D shaped in profile with an expanded outer edge and a central pair of projecting lips forming a pin rest. The centre bar is recessed and narrowed, there are projecting knobs at both ends, outlined by grooves across the frame. Similar to Whitehead (2003) page 61, no 306 hence a date of c.1550-1650 is suggested.
