Post Medieval cast lead button with integral shank which is now broken. The button is circular with a slight projection at one edge producing a 'drop' shape. It has a slightly concave back and conical front, producing a broadly triangular cross section. The conical front is decorated with three raised concentric rings around a central pellet with thinner raised lines radiating out from the centre to the edge. Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Post medieval lead cloth seal, issued during the reign of Queen Anne. Part of a four-disc seal from the series featuring a monarch's head. It is comprised of four discs in two conjoined pairs, joined in the centre with a rectangular tab. The seal is bent in the centre at the tab so the pairs of disks are back to back. A projecting tab on the back of one outer disk has been pushed through a hole in the other outer disk and stamped flat, joining them. One of the disks next to the tab is stamped with the bust of Queen Anne around which is the legend FIDEI DEFEN (Defender of the Faith). T…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Post Medieval lead cloth seal, of two disk type. Only one disk now survives with the projecting attachment on the back. The second disk and connecting strip has been lost or broken away and the break is worn. The front has a raised design of a large letter A flanked with annulets. There are the remains of a pellet border around the edge of the disk, very worn in places. It is 19.3mm by 18.5mm and 4.3mm thick; it weighs 5.63 grams. The 'A' design indicates it originates from Augsberg, Germany and the reverse disk would probably have had a pinecone; the heradlic badge of the city (Eg…

Post Medieval copper alloy trade weight from a stacking set of the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603). The weight is circular and flat on both faces with straight sides. The top has a circular indent at the centre and is stamped with a crowned EL at 5 o'clock. It is 15.4mm in diameter and 2.0mm thick; it weighs 2.62 grams ( 0.09 oz probably originally 1/8oz). Biggs (1992:50) illustrates similar weights and states that those with this mark for Elizabeth started being issued around 1590. Post Medieval lead alloy two-disc type cloth seal. Both discs remain with the central rivet which would have attached the discs together. The rivet was attached to the back disc, projected through the front disc and was stamped flat, bending it to one side and leaving the tip projecting. About 20% from the edge of one disk and the connecting strip have broken away with patinated breaks. The piece has a raised stamped design on one face, visible only on the rivet.
