Post Medieval copper alloy double-looped oval buckle with an iron pin and separate strap-plate. The loops form one continuous oval outer frame and the outer sides of the loops are slightly widened. The outer edge is rounded and the inner edge and back flat and plain. The integral strap bar is plain. The iron pin is highly corroded but remains in situ. The strap plate is formed of a thin rectangular strip of copper alloy sheet bent in half around the central bar. It has a rectangular slot at the fold for the pin and both sides are borken with irregular breaks. It is 19mm long, 21.1mm i…

Object type: DRESS FASTENER (DRESS)
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy post-medieval dress fastener with a large circular central plate. This is the eye section of a hook and eye fastener, with a rectangular loop for the eye extended to one side of the plate. The circular plate is slightly convex and moulded in low relief on the front with a central six-petalled flower and a narrow border at the edge. Around the flower are four mouldings in the form of pairs of curled lines that start on the outer border of the circle and curve away form each other as they go towards the centre. There are holes between the pairs, curls and edge and cu…

Object type: PURSE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper alloy purse bar of early Post Medieval date. The bar has a central rectangular block with a slightkly rounded lower face and corners and a circular perforation running through it on the vertical axis. Through this perforation is threaded a vertical copper alloy bar which is circular in section and rotates freely in the hole. The bar ends in a globular terminal below the block and expands into a loop above it; this loop would ahve been used to hang the purse from the belt. The loop has three collars at the base, oval in section and just the stubs of the sides…

Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy four-way strap junction of post-medieval date. The piece is formed of four circular loops arranged around a central sqaure; one of the loops has broken through. The loops curve into the square's field. The central element is recessed apart from a central pellet, perhaps to take in inlay that has now been lost. While the upper surface is moulded the lower surface is flat. The piece has a red/brown colour with patches of light-green and off-white corrosion product. This, the form and finish, suggest a date for this piece perhaps in the 17th or 18th ce…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete post-medieval cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle frame. Around a half of one of the buckle's loops has been broken away following old damage, with the outer edge gone completely and the sides surviving to differing extents above and below. The pin is also missing. The remaining oval loop is curved in cross-section due to a central recess between the sides of the buckle on the back. This is presumably a result of casting in an open, one-piece mould, whereby the metal has cooled and contracted. At the centre of the outer edge of the complete loop is an angled lobed kn…

A Post-Medieval copper alloy coin from India, probably the denomination called a paisa, probably dating to AD 1790-1830. A close parallel seems to be SWYOR-B55B81, "a Paisa of Gwalior State, Gwalior Fort mint, struck in the name of the Mughal Emperor Muhammad Akbar II, during the reign of Maharaja Daulat Rao Scindia (1796-1825)". It is common to find Indian coins in Britain, probably because they were brought here by people serving in the colonial Empire in India.

An unidentified copper alloy sub-oval object, possibly part of a dagger or sword pommel of likely Post-Medieval date or a walking stick top. The object is a hollow dome, with a stretched oval plan, more pointed (narrower) at one end than the other, and D-shaped profile. At the apex of the dome is a circular perforation (c.7.2mm diameter). The object is highly abraded, but appears to survive to its original edge around much of its circumference, The inner surface of the object is plain however the outer surface has moulded decoration that is symmetrical, barring abrasion, through…
