Cast copper alloy side plate from the hilt of a knife. The plate is sub-rectangular in shape. There is a break at one end, but the rest of the plate remains intact and in fairly good condition. The reverse has a raised ridge running along the outside edge, creating a central slot to hoild the tang of the knife, but is otherwise undecorated. The upper face has a central recessed panel with raised letters within it. These are difficult to decipher and this task is made more difficult because the first part of the inscription is missing due to the break. They appear to say [...]MAKE YOUr…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Post Medieval, 17th century, cast copper alloy openwork mount with integral attachment spikes. The mount is flat and shaped into four lobes, two large pointed oval lobes alternating with two smaller circular lobes. The tip of one of the pointed oval lobes is lost, possibly to damage. The lobes have circular holes in the centre and there is a further hole in the centre of the mount; the holes in the pointed oval lobes join the central hole while those in the circular lobes are connected to it by an indent on the front. On the back are two integral spikes, one is complete and bent inwar…

Post Medieval, 17th century, cast copper-alloy circular bridle boss. The boss is a hollow hemisphere, with an openwork design and a flat border around the edge. A break to one side has removed part of the border and one of the pair of rivet holes. The boss has a raised central knop, around which is the openwork main body, consisting of slim curving arms. The less worn arms are decorated with a scale like patten of raised semi-circles running down each arm and incised lines down their inner sides which continue at the base to meet the base of the next arm. Around this is a narrow rop…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Post Medieval copper alloy double loop buckle frame. It has two oval loops which are triangular in section with a flat back and inner side and convex curved outer side. The outer edges of the loops are widened. The strap bar is narrowed with lobed knops at either end. The pin is missing. One loop is bent upwards and the loop and strap bar are distorted. The frame is 36.8mm long, 24mm wide and 3.4mm thick. It weighs 6.58 grams. A similar example with a recessed strap bar is illustrated in Whitehead (2003:54, Nos. 307) which he suggests dates to c.1500-1650 AD.

Post Medieval copper-alloy double-loop buckle frame. The loops are D shaped in plan and trapezoidal in section with angled sides and wider back. From the centre of the outer edges of each loop projects a tri-lobed extension. The extension is stamped with an annulet in the centre with eight grooves projecting away from it, two grooves in each direction. There are smaller rounded knops projecting at each corner of the frame. The narrow strap bar is tringular in section and recessed from the frame with a lobed knop at each end. The pin is missing but there is a lump of iron corrosion on …

Post medieval cast copper alloy toy cannon. The muzzle (open end) of the cannon is missing to an old break. It is cast in one piece with a pronounced base ring and a plain tapering breech. The cascabel is also missing to an old break. The small vent hole, blocked with mud, is half way between the base ring and first reinforce ring. The barrel is corroded but appears to have recessed rings either side of the trunnions. The trunnions are circular in section, both are missing their ends, one is just a stub. The total width of the cannon across the trunnions is 16.1mm. Between the first a…

Post Medieval copper alloy double-loop oval buckle with a complete pin. In the centre of the outer edge of each loop is a pair of protruding moulded knops with a indent and incised line between them where the pin rests. The frame is thin and C-shaped in section with a concave back. The strap bar is narrowed and slightly protrudes from the frame with a lobed knop on each end. The pin is a thinning and narrowing strip of copper alloy which loops around the strap bar at the broad end and ends in a sharp point. The buckle measures 35.3mm long, 20.7mm wide, 5.6mm thick including the pin (2…

Fragment of a Post Medieval to Modern lead alloy item, possibly an inkwell. The fragment is broadly trapezoidal in plan with curved top and bottom edges and almost straight sides. The sides and broader cruved edge are old breaks while the shorter raised edge seems complete with a raised collar around part of a a circular opening. The front has a thin raised line head the broader curved edge. It is likely that the fragment has suffered some damage resulting in the fragment being flattened and an 'S' shaped profile; an upwardly curving middle which flattens out towards the top before c…

Post Medieval copper alloy double looped buckle. The frame is broadly rectangular in plan with the outer edges widening in width to pointed projections, forming triangular ends. The strap bar has a lobed knop at either end. Remains of iron corrosion on the strap suggests the pin, now missing, could have been made of iron. It measures 47.3mm in length, 23.7mm in width, 2.1mm in thickness and weighs 3.7g. Whitehead (2003; 82) illustrates a similar example with a wider frame, no. 512, which is dated 1250-1700 AD.
