Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

An incomplete cast copper-alloy double-looped buckle of post-medieval date, now missing its pin. The buckle is sub-rectangular in form, effectively a rectangle with the corners cut off; one of the outer edges is not straight. The buckle is flat and plain and has corroded to a red-brown colour overlain by patches of light green corrosion product. Such a buckle can plausibly be dated to the 17th century, although a slightly later date cannot be ruled out (cf. Griffiths et al., 215; ref. 3001).

A corroded but complete cast lead button of post-medieval date (Th. without loop: c. 9.1mm). The button is domed, with a flat back with central, integral iron loop of circular cross-section; no casting seam is visible. The upper surface bears patterning moulded in low relief, consisting of lines and circles around a central cross, but with obvious symmetry. Read (2005, 57ff.) dates such buttons to the 16th century.

An extremely worn, broken and bent, probably irregular late 17th-century copper-alloy halfpenny of William III, first issue, London mint, dated '1795' AD (cf. Spink 3554). Around a quarter of the original flan survives after ragged old breaks. This may have been broken deliberately after it was discovered to be a fake. Suggestive features are an incorrect die axis measurement, an unbarred 'A' on the reverse and an unclear date which appears to read '1795'.

A cast gunmetal (copper-alloy) circular trade weight of post-medieval date. The weight has a circular rim, c. 4.6mm thick, and a circular groove towards its centre. The lower surface has a punched central circle within a circular depression; the zone beyond is covered with file marks. The sides are shallowly bevelled, with the rim slightly wider than the base. The upper face is stamped with an initial 'G' surmounted by a crown (at c. 3 o'clock), a ewer (for the Founder's Company, maker of weights) (at c. 6 o'clock), an 'A' (for avoirdupois) (at 9 o'clock), the sword of St Paul (for t…
