An unidentified copper-alloy artefact.
The widest part of the artefact is located a short distance below centre, where there is a cylindrical moulding with a simple grooved and ridged moulding at either end. A rectangular-sectioned bar projects upwards from above this moulding, tapering towards the apex, where it terminates in what appears to be the remains of a loop. Projecting below the cylindrical moulding is a flat-sectioned piece which decreases in thickness as it flares towards the distal end, where longitudinal grooves divide the surface into three segments, the central one …

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy strap-end of Medieval date.
The piece represents the projecting end from a socketed strap-end. It is of thin section, flat on the underside, and takes the form of three equal-sized discs, arranged in an inverted-sub-triangular formation. The surface of each of these discs is concave and has been incised with a number of parallel, angled grooves, probably designed to catch the light. This effect would have been enhanced by the addition of a now-corroded white metal coating. At the top of the piece is a remnant of the short arm that would have joined this pr…

The iron axis bar is visible within a central slit in the underside of the wings. It is at this point that the now-missing pin would have been hinged. A copper-alloy seal matrix of Medieval (probably 14th century) date.
The printing face is shield-shaped, the central image and legend well executed. The image appears to be a caricature of a lion's body with a man's head. The lion is in a heraldic pose, standing rampant regardant - ie. standing on its hind legs, the head turned back towards the tail. The legend, which starts at 12 o'clock, reads '*PRIVE SVY E POV CONV', a previously recorded seal legend (see Harvey and McGuinness 1996: 117 (variant)) which roughly translates as 'Private to you and little known'. The handle is of hex…
