The pendant is slightly bent, with the pointed bottom of the shield curving upwards slightly. The shield is marked by three evenly spaced horizontal grooves, approximately 2mm in width. Probably a Medieval or post medieval cast lead alloy cup weight from a set of nested weights, dating to c. AD 1300-1600. The weight was originally open in profile, having a circular base with the sides flaring up to a wider rim. It has been compressed and one side is now folded inwards, although the original base area remains relatively unaffected. The flat rim surface itself is decorated with a motif of repeated raised circles, which continue around the full circumference. A Medieval silver double patard of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy (1419-67) and Brabant (1466-67), minted for Flanders. In 1469, following an agreement made between Edward IV and Charles the Bold, these coins were made legal tender in England and remained so for over 60 years afterwards; they crop up in hoards (in steadily declining numbers) until well into Henry VIII's reign. The Burgundian rulers were seen as friends of the English and this is the main reason that this type of foreign coin was allowed to circulate here. The metal is not quite sterling value, so although they w…

The coin has been clipped to the inner circle and is pierced at 12 o'clock on the obverse with a large hole made near the edge and not adjacent to a cross end on the reverse. Due to the lack of other modifications, such as gilding, it is not clear that piercing alone has removed it circulating as coinage, which was often judged by weight due to heavy clipping in this period. Therefore it has been rcorded as a coin, not as an object, which might have been potential Treasure.
