Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A corroded fragment from a Roman copper-alloy openwork folding knife or razor handle, of the 'hare and hound' type. It would have shown a hound running along solid ground and biting the rump of a hare in front. It is difficult to discern what survives: perhaps the hare, with elongated nose. The iron blade is also missing, although some corroded remains are apparent in the abraded slot on the underside of the 'solid ground' (where the knife blade would have rested when folded). The object is much worn and corroded with a grey/green colour. There is a recess in the upright element joi…

Object type: MEDICAL IMPLEMENT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A cast copper-alloy object, broken and damaged: possibly a Roman medical implement, an olivary (spoon-)probe. The olive is an elongated oval terminal of circular cross-section, c. 24.6mm long, up to 4.7mm in diameter. The shaft continues circular in cross-section, bent round and back on itself; the terminal bent slightly to one side, all presumably as an element of old damage. The patina is mid/dark-green where it has not been corroded. The piece is comparable to two such probes illustrated in Bishop (1996, 39; refs. 211, 212).

Object type: STEELYARD WEIGHT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A corroded and abraded cast lead object - probably a Roman steelyard weight. The object is broadly circular in plan with a large, corroded iron loop (L.: 23.3mm) off centre on its upper surface. The weight tapers to a broadly oval base (33.2 by 25.7mm); the sides taper to the short ends, while the long sides have been squashed. The base is flat enough for the weight to stand. The surface is now a light-grey/white colour with numerous scratches, dents and areas of cracking. Given its current mass it is unclear how this weight fits into the Roman weight-system.

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy Colchester one-piece brooch of Late Iron Age or early Roman date (1st century AD). At the head, the wings are plain flat rectangular pieces with rounded outer ends (18.0mm in total width). From the centre of the underside of the head projects an upper bar which is bent round on itself to meet the front of the bow creating a loop to hold the external chord; this is flat to the bow beyond the chord. Below the bar starts the integral spring. The spring has four coils on the left side (head uppermost), the end one of which continues into the ext…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A damaged strip of decorated cast copper alloy bent around into a crude ring with overlapping terminals, possibly a finger ring of Roman date. The strip has damaged edges and is now variable in width, with a maximum of 10.7mm wide. It has a flat inner side and slightly convex outer face and is 1.6mm thick in the centre. Around the front runs a decorative panel marked by indented lines at the top and bottom. There are multiple evenly spaced lines running at an angle across the panel, these are only visible in places possibly due to wear and corrosion but it is also possible they only c…
