An incomplete small silver spoon dating to the post-medieval period. The remaining portion comprises the bowl and adjoining length of handle; any terminal knop to the handle is missing to an old, patinated break. The bowl is an elongated oval with a rounded outer edge, which appears distorted and possibly worn. The stem has a D or trapezoid cross section, wider at the back than the front and tapers slightly in width away from the bowl before starting to widen again before the break. The joint of the bowl and stem are extended on the back with a rounded drop and elongated triangul…

Object type: SPOON
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

A fragment of a silver spoon dating to the Medieval to Post-medieval period. The remaining portion comprises a length of the shank and a fragment of the bowl where they join. The stem has a lozenge shaped cross section and tapers distally. At the distal end the stem terminates in an old break. The stem creates a 'V' shape on the underside of the spoon bowl, where it joins. The bowl may well have been fig-shaped but too little exists to be certain. While the cross-section size at the break end is small the strength and rigidity of the material suggests the shank might have extende…

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An abraded Medieval cast copper alloy seal matrix dating to CE 1200-1350. The seal matrix is flat and pointed oval (vesica shaped) in shape. The central design appears to be a circular or oval domed shape. This interior of this feature is abraded making its depiction unclear. There appears to be 3 vertical lines running across a portion of this dome. There might also be two lines running tangentially from the edge of the dome towards the edge of the matrix's inscription. Probably a scallop shell with curved edge downwards, a popular Medieval motif but uncommon on seal matrices. Other …
