A Roman cast copper-alloy Colchester two-piece brooch dating to the first century AD. The brooch consists of the head of the brooch, its wings and a portion of the bow.The head has semi-circular sectioned wings, slightly concave at the back to accommodate the spring (not found with the artefact). The front of the wings are rounded, plain and show chipped ends which have become rounded through abrasion. Between the wings and projecting 6.8mm away from the bow of the brooch is a rounded lug pierced by a single hole (1.6mm in diameter) that is now filled with brown soil. This would …

Copper alloy Brooch. Knee Brooch, as kindly suggested by Laura Burnett with reference to IOW-C9CD63and SOM-3B6BAF. The fastening may derive from the Polden Hill series (cf. Mackreth's CD PH 6, the 'Eastern' type).The plate at one end of the wings may have served as a hook, and there is the stub of a rearward pointing hook at the top of the wings. Copper alloy with gilding, brooch. Cast brooch resembling members of the Headstud class, albeit lacking the stud; Laura Burnett kindly identifies this as a knee brooch. Semi-tubular wings closed at their ends retain an axis bar and a nine coil spring and a pin. A complete Roman, copper alloy nail-cleaner strap-end with crescent-shaped lugs and a) simple punched decoration. A Roman copper alloy initial T-shaped brooch, probably dating to c. AD 50-100. Only the head and upper part of the bow of the brooch survive. The wings are broken at the end and measure 23.59mm in width and are cylindrical with a sub-rectangular slot cut into the reverse to accommodate a hinged pin, now lost. White cement can be seen in the ends of the broken wings, to hold the cross bar. The bow is D-shaped in section with a flat back and convex front. An incomplete large Roman copper alloy hinged developed T-shaped brooch, probably dating to c. 75 - 150. The brooch comprises of the upper bow, the majority of the wing casing and a broken head loop, the lower bow, catchplate and pin are all missing. At the head of the brooch the cylindrical wings survive almost intact except for the tip of the left wing where white cement is visible.
