It is decorated with a transverse groove at each end and a pair of transverse grooves at the cente. The other sides of the frame are rectangular in cross section and measure c.2.9mm in width. The part of the frame opposite to the top is broken at its centre and the two pieces of copper alloy aro now slightly bent inwards. The strap-slide h…

One half of a Post-medieval cast copper-alloy two-part sword-belt toggle-clasp dating from the 16th to 17 century. Toggle-clasps have two sections which lock together, one with an eye and the other with a toggle-bar; this artefact is the section with a toggle-bar. The piece has a main plate with a bar extending from one end on the front of which is an integral D-shaped plate which therefore sits forward of the main plate and acted as a the toggle. The main plate has a rounded end adjacent to the the bar and toggle then slightly concave sides then a slightly expanded end opposite the b…

A cast copper alloy strap fitting probably medieval in date (c. AD 1100-1500). The strap fitting is made of a rectangular strip (c. 5.6mm wide) that is sub-oval in cross section with a slightly flatter lower surface. One end of the strip expands into an circular terminal (c.10.4mm diameter), from the back of which projects a conical lug, whose diameter narrows from 4.6mm at its base to 2.8mm at its rounded point. This point is bent sideways at 90 degrees. The opposite end of the strip also expands into a circular terminal (c.9.6mm diameter) that has a circular hole (c.3.5mm diamet…

A copper-alloy Post-medieval strap fitting / belt hanger, dating to AD 1500 - 1700. The mount comprises a pointed oval, slightly convex at the front and concave at the back. The main body has two circular rivet holes on its central axis, each with an internal diameter of c. 2mm; one hole is at the centre while the other is c. 9mm from the moulded end. One end terminates in a rounded knop. The other end extends to an integral hook that curves around to touch the back of the fitting. Through this loop there is a seperate copper aloy ring, 13.2mm in diameter. The ring is flat and broa…

Medieval cast copper alloy sub-oval pendant loop. The artefact is made up of a flat circular loop; at one end of which is a collared projecting acorn terminal knop of width 4.4mm. On the opposite side there is a rectangular bar with a flat, filed, top edge. The sides are rectangular in section and thin towards the rectangular bar. The metal is pitted and it is a mid greyish-brown colour. The object survives to a length of 15.7mm, 11.4mm wide, 2.9mm thick and weighs 0.99 grams. Egan and Pritchard (2002: 219 and 221) identify a similar item, No.1192, as a pendant loop from a belt …

A copper alloy Medieval strap fitting. The fitting is one long rectangular sheet of metal with simple decoration which has been bent at about a third of the length in what appears to be later damage. At one end (the end which had been bent) there are two rivet holes with rusted remains of iron rivets in situ, and at the other end there is only one rivet hole with the rivet missing. The end with two rivets seems to to step up slightly into a platform above the rest of the plate with a rough top and it also appears to be quite worn around the end leaving it at an angle to the plate with…

An incomplete Medieval cast copper-alloy strap-fitting dating to AD 1350 to 1400. The bar mount originally consisted of two parallel arms that were linked at the base by a semi-circular suspension loop. This loop has worn through so the two arms are now separate each with part of the loop attached. the inner side of the loop has sides that fold in suggesting it was made by hammering the sides of the strip. Both bars are flat and are perforated with two rivet holes, around the holes are the remains of corroded iron rivets. The fitting has a green and brown patina with traces of gilding…

A copper alloy artefact, probably a strap fitting such as a strap union, or perhaps a harness fitting or mount. It probably dates from the Iron Age or Roman period, about 800 BC - AD 100. The object is incomplete, but appears to have been symetrical. It consists of a pair of opposed triangular loops, both springing from a central block. The block is square in profile, but narrow when viwed from the front, rather like a square collar. It is decorated with incised border lines on the front, upper and lower faces. Projecting from the back of the central element is a circular sectioned…

A probable strap fitting of uncertain date, possibly Roman, c. AD 43-410. The object comprises of a flat rectangular plate of copper alloy, with a slight knop at its terminal. At the attachment end a pair of V-shaped grooves define a transverse collar, with a second corresponding pair below, just above the mid-point, helping to define a sub-circular boss. This is engraved with a lozenge containing a pellet, with the channels inlaid with niello. The rectangular field below the boss is decorated with two parallel rectangular, niello inlaid channels, with each containing a zig-zag left r…

A cast copper-alloy two-piece strap fitting consisting of a bar mount and a suspension loop dating to c. AD 1350 to1400. The bar mount consists of a rectangular plate from which a narrow rectangular strip projects from the bottom and is bent toward the back surface terminating in a lozenge-shaped end, which has a circular rivet in its centre. This terminal is held in place by means of an integrally-cast cylindrical mount shaft and these elements fitted together would have held the fitting to a strap. A simple copper-alloy circular ring is attached to the mount plate within the loop cr…
