A Medieval silver cut farthing of John (AD 1199-1216), probably dating to AD 1204-1205. Short cross class 5a1. Minted by Iohan at an uncertain mint. North (1994: 221) no. 968/4.
The coin appears to have a die error in which the obverse legend reads [hEN]RIE[VS REX]. Mass (2001: plate 49, no. 1319) publishes a class 5a2 coin minted by Iohan at Norwich with the same die error, although the reverse die has the cross pommee intial mark. This coin may thus be a Va2/a1 mule, however, similar E-like Cs are also present on other coins (e.g. Nos. 1300 and 1301 from Exeter and 1302 from Lin…
