A probable strap fitting of uncertain date, possibly Roman, c. AD 43-410. The object comprises of a flat rectangular plate of copper alloy, with a slight knop at its terminal. At the attachment end a pair of V-shaped grooves define a transverse collar, with a second corresponding pair below, just above the mid-point, helping to define a sub-circular boss. This is engraved with a lozenge containing a pellet, with the channels inlaid with niello. The rectangular field below the boss is decorated with two parallel rectangular, niello inlaid channels, with each containing a zig-zag left r…

Post-Medieval copper alloy snake shaped strap-fitting and ring. The S shaped fitting has a naturalistically modelled reptilian or bird like head at both ends, a double bar running around the middle of the fitting in low relief with further curvilinear features to either side; the details of which are worn. It is worn but there maybe traces of scales or decoration behind one head. The tip of one of the snakes head is touching the central part of its body and this has allowed for the retention of a ring. This is plain with a circular section and has a depression where the loop has rubbed…

Medieval cast copper alloy strap slide. The frame is five sided with a flat base, vertical sides and a peak in the centre of the top bar. The sides and base are rectangular in cross section and the top bar is D shaped with a flat inner side. There is a hole through the base of the frame, half way along, which would have held a separate circular rivet, now missing, the hole is filled with iron corrosion suggesting the rivet was iron. The frame is 13.8mm long, 14.8mm tall and 2.7mm thick, it weighs 0.99 grams. Egan and Pritchard (1991) illustrate a very similar example (page 231, fig …

Medieval copper alloy hooked strap fitting. The upper part of the fitting is in the form of a bar the base of which curves forward then back to form a large open loop (hook). The upper bar is triangular in section with a flat back and ridge running down the centre. The bar widens and thickens from 4.3mm wide by 2.9mm thick at the top to 6.2mm by 5.0mm thick at the junction with the hook. Projecting at 90 degrees form the back of the bar are two integral rivets to attach it to the strap, both circular in section with slightly flattened (roved over) ends and c.4.7mm long. One rivet is n…

A fragment of a cast copper alloy strap fitting for a sword belt, dating to the Post-Medieval period. The fragment consists of the lower part of a shield-shaped plate with concaved sides and a rounded base with the stub of a hook projecting from the centre. The front face of the plate is decorated with a symmetrical foliage design in moulded relief. The design vaguely resembles leaves of the vine. The reverse is plain and undecorated. This type of fitting would have been attached to a scabbard strap. Read (2008: 219, no. 790) illustrates a similar mount which he dates to the 16th or 1…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy four-way strap junction of post-medieval date. The piece is formed of four circular loops arranged around a central sqaure; one of the loops has broken through. The loops curve into the square's field. The central element is recessed apart from a central pellet, perhaps to take in inlay that has now been lost. While the upper surface is moulded the lower surface is flat. The piece has a red/brown colour with patches of light-green and off-white corrosion product. This, the form and finish, suggest a date for this piece perhaps in the 17th or 18th ce…

A misshapen Medieval cast copper-alloy strap fitting, a loop for a strap union (1200-1400). This 'U'-shaped loop is part of a strap junction / union. It consists of a narrow shaft, rectangular in cross-section, which expands at one end to accommodate a hole that contains a separate copper-alloy rivet. At the opposite end there is an integral flat plate which is roughly square in plan. This object is reddish purple and has light green corrosion products. There is a fleck of surface coating on the outer face of the square plate which is probably tin. Height: 19.79mm; width of plat…

A broadly circular mount of medieval date, abraded at the circumference. The mount is of copper-alloy sheet, perforated near the edge at opposing points. One surface is tinned and covered in fine diagonal striations. The perforations are through the coated surface but no rivets survive. For mounts of similar construction see Egan and Pritchard (1991, 166; fig. 107).

A small trapezoidal object cast in copper alloy, possibly a mis-cast medieval strap-slide with a pair of short pointed internal projections. It is trapezoidal in shape with slightly rounded corners. The artefact is flat on both faces. It has a large, broadly T-shaped openwork, slightly off centre. On one surface there is a longitudinally incised line between the hole and the side; the wider side. The attribution of this artefact is uncertain; it is reminiscent of medieval padlocks. For rectangular/trapezoidal strap-slides/loops can be found illustrated in Griffiths et al. (2007, 129…
