Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy ring, undiagnostic, but plausibly a medieval annular buckle frame, of conventional module (c. 14th century AD). The frame consists of a ring of circular cross-section. There is a thinned and narrowed area at one point, which was perhaps provision for a pin; as no pin survives it is impossible to definitively classify this as a buckle. As there is neither a constriction nor a pin rest the artefact has been recorded (tentatively) as a buckle rather than a brooch (see Egan and Pritchard 1991, 57). Many examples of annular buckles have been found in London in 14th-century c…

A cast copper-alloy rectangular single-looped buckle of medieval to post-medieval date (c. AD 1400-1700). The buckle's rectangular frame has rounded corners on the outer edge. It is square in cross-section with some rounding to the outer edge. Looped in situ is a thick wire pin which has corroded in the same manner as the frame. The buckle's form is not diagnostic hence the large date range offered.

A damaged fragment from a cast copper-alloy rectangular double-looped buckle frame of medieval to post-medieval date (c. AD 1350-1700). The buckle would have had two rectangular loops that share a pin bar and retains a central, integral sub-rectangular tab on one side which has a sub-rectangular opening. This frame, including the tab is flat on both faces, other than some slight bevelling around the edges on the upper face. This fragment consists of much of one of the sides as demonstrated by a break at the return to the outer edge at one end; the other part of the side has been br…

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete late early-medieval cast copper alloy buckle frame (c. 10th century). Approximately 2/3 of the frame survives, with three remaining protruding conical zoomorphic heads as decoration and a pronounced sub-triangular pin rest with central groove. The zoomorphic heads seem to consist of an elongated snout with two simple eye holes. The two heads that comprise an outer edge of the buckle frame flank the pin rest, with a simple frame in between the elements. However, the third head is connected to one of the outer decorative heads by means of a thicker bevelled frame segment w…

Late Medieval or Post Medieval cast copper alloy circular double loop buckle. The frame is circular with a pointed lobe at one end of the central bar, the pin is missing. One side is broken with most of that loop missing and bent at the old breaks. The buckle has external bevelling to the front side of 6the frame, with a flat back. The buckle frame is 32.9mm long by 21.45mm wide by 2.8mm thick and weighs 4.36grams. It was probably originally similar in form to Whitehead (1996: 46), nos. 265 and 266 which he dates to c. AD 1450 to 1550. See BH-F3AA87 on this database for a more co…

Unfinished post-medieval cast copper alloy asymmetrical double looped two piece buckle missing both the spindle and the pin. The had one trapezoid and one D-shaped loop. The top and bottom sides are slightly concave curved with three raised squares in the centre of each, flanked by scalloping. The scalloping consists of an outer semi-circular indent becoming more indented towards the outer edge and bordered by a raised line on the inner side. The central square is where it is likely that the hole for the spindle would have been drilled as this section is slightly thickened by the rais…

A medieval cast copper alloy buckle with an enamelled heraldic panel on the plate. The pin is missing. The length of the frame is 25.74mm and the plate measures 18.36mm x 35.38mm. The frame is oval with a narrow offset bar and the outer edge is sloping and has a pin seating groove. The plate is rectangular and has a single rounded rivet. The heraldry may be that of the Russell family (Argent, a chevron between three cross-crosslets sable within a bordure engrailed gules) but this is not clear. The same form of buckle, but with different heraldry, was found in Lincoln (Cherry …

A fragment from a late Roman cast copper-alloy openwork buckle plate. The fragment appears to be the corner of the plate at the frame end. The frame end is defined by a transverse ridge at the on the upper surface, towards one end of which is an integral loop. The loop is 6.05mm thick and perforated to take the axis bar around which the frame would have hinged. It is defined at its lower edge adjacent to the ridge by a transversely incised line; there is a further longitudinally incised line at the internal edge on the upper surface. The plate beyond the ridge has a flat lower surfa…

Medieval cast copper alloy buckle with a single oval loop frame and large integral plate. The frame has been bent backwards and to one side, distorting the original shape. It is triangular in section with a flat back and ridge around the outer edge of the front. The outer side is widened and slightly thickened into a large rectangular bar which is oval in section with flattened back and front. The slightly thinner integral plate is trapezoid, widening away from the frame with a roughly straight outer edge, indented slightly at each end. The edge appears to be broken between the indent…

Medieval or Post Medieval cast copper-alloy double-loop buckle frame with attached plate. The frame has two oval loops with flat backs and inner sides and rounded outer sides. The strap bar is narrowed. The plate is incomplete and consists of a rectangular strip of copper alloy sheet, 0.5mm thick, bent in half over the strap bar with a central slot for the pin at the bend. The back plate has broken off after the bend and the end of the front plate is irregular and appears broken. There are the corroded remains of two separate circular rivets through the front plate, probably of coppe…
