Medieval copper alloy buckle plate, length: 39 mm, width: 28 mm, thickness: 6 mm, weight: 12.85 grams. The object is sub rectangular in form and cross section and is incomplete. Its major component is a sheet which has a central rectangular hole. The sheet has been folded over itself so that the hole is positioned on one edge (forming a central pin hole and allowing the plate to be secured onto one edge of a buckle frame) The sheet is plain on one side and decorated on the other side with a series of short parallel lines which run along each side of the hole (horizontally as shown)…

The frame is 27.46mm long with a maximum width of 24.48mm and a thickness of 1.85mm . It weighs 3.38g Whitehead (2003:74) illustrates a very similar example, no.455 which he suggests are 'mainly AD 1570-1700' in date with no evidence given. Medieval or post-medieval cast copper-alloy double-loop buckle frame. The frame has two oval loops which are D-shaped in section with flat backs and slightly widened outer edges. The strap bar is narrowed. The pin is missing but there are traces of iron corrosion on the strap bar and one loop. The frame is 23.0mm long, 18.8mm wide and 2.5mm thick, it weighs 1.74 grams. A similar example is illustrated in Margeson (1993:30, no.164) from a 17th century context , although with an incised line for a pin rest in the centre of each loop, it is likely similar simple forms were in use …
