Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Part of a probably Mesolithic flint blade, probably dating to the period c.9000-4000BC. It is a secondary piece with one small patch of pebble cortex surviving near its proximal end. The artefact is rectangular with a triangular cross section. The dorsal face has two negative blade scars from previous removal. One of the mesal edges have areas of chipping. There is a snap at the proximal end, thus removing the striking platform and bulb of percussion. The flint is a medium grey with areas of mottled white. The pebble cortex is a medium brown and orange colour. The lithic is 21.8mm …

Object type: MACE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete perforated cobble "mace head" or pebble hammer of probable Mesolithic to Neolithic date. The mace head is a well rounded oblong in plan, sub-rectangular in profile and sub-oval in cross-section with three sides that have a rounded central ridge and rounded corners. It may have been a beach pebble that had a natural hole which was then exploited to create the mace. The majority of the object is covered in thick, natural, original cortext but it has been broken and worked on two adjoining sides, exposing the flint. The side with the flint exposed completely has a straig…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probable flint scraper of probably Bronze Age date or AD 2500 to 800. The scraper is struck off a tertiary flake and retains no cortex. The scraper is sub-rectangular in plan albeit with one slightly curved mesal side. Every edge is heavily chipped and damaged but behind this damage is evidence of semi-parallel abrupt retouch along the majority of their ventral surface while the distal edge demonstrates this semi-abrupt retouch on its dorsal surface also. There is a very prominent bulb of percussion and the flake has removed a large part of a striking platform with it, giving it …

Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age fragments of tertiary flint implements. The fragments are trapezoidal in shape and are worked bifacially. One fragment is of translucent pale grey flint with a covering, stepped and low angle retouch on one side and semi-abrupt on the other; it has slightly convex faces and is transversally broken at the proximal end. The second fragment is of translucent pale brown flint with a covering, sub-parallel semi-abrupt retouch all along, except for the proximal end wheer there is a transverse break; it has considerably convex faces giving a pointed ova…

Object type: LEAF ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete leaf shaped arrow head of Neolithic date (4000-2350 BC). The ventral surface is smooth with a low diffuse bulb of percussion and widely spaced conchoidal ripple marks. Both of the long sides have short, semi-parallel low angle retouch running along their entire length, lightly more invasive on one edge than the other, while the base shows signs longer, more invasive semi-parallel shallow retouch, possibly to thin the bulb of percussion and striking platform for hafting. The dorsal face has invasive semi-parallel scaled retouch down one edge, and short, shallow, semi-parall…

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Five Neolithic to Early Bronze Age flint scrapers, probably dating to c. 4000-1,500BC. A flint scraper worked from a secondary or tertiary flake with a small area of white patina on the right distal edge of the dorsal face. The dorsal face has two parallel blade or long flakes scars with short, semi-abrupt scalar retouch along the left edge, becoming long, parallel abrupt at the distal end and short, scalar again at the right proximal edge. The ventral face has a relatively pronounced bulb of percussion at the proximal end with several bulb scars. The scraper is a translucent grey…

Object type: LEAF ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probably incomplete leaf shaped arrow head of Neolithic date (4000-2350 BC). The flake is bifacially worked with slightly convex faces. It is transversally broken at the top (distal end) with an old patnated break. It is also broken at the bottom, slightly on one side, with a large inwards break on the other, these breaks are only partially patinated, sugesting they are more recent damage. The flake has an invasive parallel shallow retouch on both sides along both edges apart from the right edge near the proximal end on the ventral face. The flint has a white/pale grey patina. It me…

Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Probably a palaeolithic flint tool reused in the later prehistoric period, possibly as a knife or other cutting tool. The tool is of a dark brown/black flint, rolled and with significant areas of iron staining. At more recent removal scars the flint can be seen to be mottled with cloudy white areas and rare white inclusions. The tool is D-shaped in plan, and with a truncated pointed oval cross section, with the dorsal face being more pronouncedly curved than the ventral. The initial working of the tool is bifacial, with covering, sub-parallel semi-abrupt retouch on the dorsal fac…

Object type: BORER
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Flint borer, probably Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age, c. 3300-1000 BC. Worked from a tertiary flake of very dark brown/black flint with some grey/brown patches near proximal end. No striking platform survives, with a relatively diffuse bulb of percussion although with a bulbar scar. There are three flake removal scars on the dorsal face, all seemingly blade-like flakes, with two struck from the proximal end, both terminating in hinge fractures, and a third struck at a perpendicular angle, all three have relatively pronounced ripple marks. This last removal appears to have gone w…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Bronze Age or possibly Neolithic chert horseshoe shaped scraper dating to the period c. 2350-800 BC. It has been struck off a secondary flake, as there is between 25-35% of the cortex remaining on the dorsal face and was semi-circular in shape with some damage to one side which has removed one end of the semi-circle. The ventral face has a single large bulb of percussion, with a large bulbar scar. The dorsal surface has three parallel negative flake scars from previous removals of blade like flakes. The curved distal edge has neat short semi-abrupt parallel retouch at the ends close…
