Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete Roman cast copper alloy Colchester Derivative Dolphin or possibly Polden Hill type brooch, c.43-100 AD, with spring mechanism and probably a rearward facing hook, now missing.
The head was formed of two C-sectioned wings creating a continuous half cylinder, these are now 17.9mm wide and very worn. The tips are bent backwards suggesting slight end caps although probably not large enough for a Polden Hills type attachment method. The tops are corroded and any decoration unclear. At the centre of the back of the head is a mass of iron corrosion with the imprint of a spri…

Along one lateral edge, in the medial section there are two notches, next to each other, which have been formed from the dorsal surface. The ventral surface has some invasive retouch, mainly to reduce the bulb of percussion. One portion of the proximal side edge has low ab…

Object type: BALANCE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Worcestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper alloy unidentified object, but probably a balance arm. The object is a circular sectioned bar which is angled at c. 45°, but this is probably due to damage rather than intention. At the mind point and at each terminal there is a rectangular boss decorated with low-relief ring and dot designs. One terminal then has a short, circular sectioned, narrowed projection protruding from the boss. The terminal of this projection is possibly broken. The opposite boss has a broken surface suggesting there was a projection on this boss as well. The surface of the object has a well e…

Object type: STIRRUP
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Copper-alloy object, probably the upper portion of a stirrup. From the front, the object is rectangular with a rounded end, decorated with four radiating linear grooves forming a scallop-shell design. The sides have an oblique step as decoration. The lower edge of the step on each side appears to be the broken edge of an arm which would have protruded downwards at 45° to the sides. On the reverse the upper edge of the sides are joined by an integral cross bar. This bar is angular on the lower portion and rounded on the upper edge. The roundedness is due to wear, perhaps due to…
