A fragment of a corroded, cast copper-alloy terret (rein guide) dating from the late Iron Age or early Roman periods. This comprises around half of the hoop, and has been broken at the junction of hoop and bar, and the middle of the central pair of back-to-back sub-hemispherical lipped protrusions, respectively. The collar at the junction of hoop and bar is broadly sub-oval: 11.9 by 10.8mm. Vestiges of the bar suggest that it was rectangular in cross-section with rounded corners. The oval loop is circular in cross-section. It would have featured three pairs of lipped protrusions by co…

A corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy Colchester one-piece brooch of Late Iron Age or early Roman date (1st century AD). At the head, the wings are plain flat rectangular pieces with rounded outer ends (18.0mm in total width). From the centre of the underside of the head projects an upper bar which is bent round on itself to meet the front of the bow creating a loop to hold the external chord; this is flat to the bow beyond the chord. Below the bar starts the integral spring. The spring has four coils on the left side (head uppermost), the end one of which continues into the ext…

A damaged and incomplete Late Iron Age/Early Roman cast copper-alloy brooch, probably best classified as being of the strip bow type. The brooch has a rectangular bow (W.: 11.0mm). The head is the widest point (11.9mm) and features a central removal (pin slot) and a cylinder formed by rolling the head forward on itself, as is the case for this type. Retained within the slot, looped around the axis bar, is the head of the pin, the rest of which is otherwise missing. The flat bow is decorated with low transverse ridges. Some of these rows are decorated with circular punches. Below the b…

A cast copper-alloy artefact: possibly a toggle of Late Iron Age/early Romano-British date. The piece is of simple construction - it takes the form of a dumbbell with a central waist (5.8mm). The body to each side is faceted with the shape of a square with rounded corners for its cross-section. It is seemingly complete, with flat terminals and no evidence of breaks. The object is very slightly curved in profile. It has a mid-green smooth patina with small patches of lighter corrosion product.

A rim sherd from a later Iron Age coarseware jar dating from approximately 300 BC - AD 100. The jar has a slightly outward turned rim with a flat top and rounded outer edge. Below the short rim the body curved outwards at c.45 degrees. Not enough of the rim remains to estimate the diameter as it is slightly irregular but it indicates a large vessel. The relatively hard fired fabric is only slightly scratched by a finger nail and has a mid-brown core and a dark-brown to black surface with burnishing on the outer side and rim. The fabric has abundant (c.25%) angular flint temper of c. 2…

Broad period: IRON AGE

Copper alloy ring. The ring is circular in section. Two transverse grooves are just visible aournd the outside. It has an outer diameter of 17mm and an inner diameter of 11mm. The thickness of the ring ranges from 4mm at its thickest, to 3mm at its thinnest. Although cast copper alloy beads with similar transverse grooves are known from the Bronze Age to Roman periods, the distinct and apparently deliberate difference between the two sides may suggest this is a suspension or harness loop which has been worn through use, rather than an Iron Age bead.

A corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy Colchester one-piece brooch dating to the late Iron Age to early Roman period (c. 25 - c. 60 AD). It retains its rearward facing hook at the top of the head, it is bent back on itself to meet the front of the bow and would have held the external chord. The stub of the integral spring and pin survives at the back of the head, below the hook. The wings are minimal, sub-rectangular and flat; 11.0mm wide, one appears incomplete and the other has a bent tip, curled under. The bow bends at 90 degrees just above the head, beyond this it curves back…
