Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Medieval cast copper alloy buckle with a single oval loop frame and large integral plate. The frame has been bent backwards and to one side, distorting the original shape. It is triangular in section with a flat back and ridge around the outer edge of the front. The outer side is widened and slightly thickened into a large rectangular bar which is oval in section with flattened back and front. The slightly thinner integral plate is trapezoid, widening away from the frame with a roughly straight outer edge, indented slightly at each end. The edge appears to be broken between the indent…

A Post-Medieval copper alloy enamelled button dating to c. AD 1640-1700. The button is circular in plan, with a convex front and concave reverse. From the centre of the reverse an integral shank expands, terminating in a now incomplete drilled loop. Traces of iron corrosion are affixed to both the loop and reverse face of the button, suggetsing the original presence of an iron chain. The front of the button is decorated with a foliate design cast in low relief, with four petals radiating out from a central hemispherical boss. Each petal also contains a series of four raised pellets…

An incomplete Medieval (1400-1450) copper alloy composite crescentic strap end with trefoil projection, missing its backplate. It measures 42.85x29.53x2.95mm and weighs 8.7g. The cast upper plate is crescental with remains of iron rivets at the points where the crescent ends join to form a circle. In shape the plate is roughly D-shaped with a wide outer edge, much narrower edge, and oval opening 13.46x15.68mm. To the reverse it is hollowed with a c.1.5mm wide rim running around much of the edge (but not the narrowed edge or the trefoil projection). Two further rivets are still in si…

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Warwickshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A gilded copper-alloy cloisonné brooch dating from the late Early Medieval period. The brooch is incomplete but is clearly of a type of cloisonné enamel brooch that was popular in England during the late tenth and early eleventh centuries AD. As it is incomplete it is a little difficult to determine for certain whether it falls within the flanged 'Colchester' type or the the lobed 'Saunderton' type of brooch (as distinguised by David Buckton in 'Late 10th and IIth century cloisonné enamel brooches' Medieval Archaeol 30, 1986, 8-18). The flat reverse and the damaged edges, which per…

The central decorative element from a circular enamelled brooch of late 10th to 11th century date (Saunderton type). The circular component is divided into a scrolling cruciform pattern with separate cells of red, blue and white glass made using a cloisonne technique set into a backing plate with integral raised sides. The rest of the brooch, catchplate and pin are missing. The brooch may have been gilded but there is no trace of gilding on this fragment.

The head and upper bow from a copper-alloy initial T-shaped brooch of early Roman date. The lower part of the bow and foot is missing to an old break. The head is formed of two cylindrical wings flanking a central slot. One wing is shorter than the other but still has a neat, worn, end suggesting it was mis-cast or broken in antiquity. The head is 17.4mm wide. The wings hold the axis bar for the hinged pin, one end of the copper alloy bar is visible embeded in white material, probably solder in the end of the shorter wing. The pin once hinged in the central slot but is now missing.…
