Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A collection of six retouched chert flakes of probable Bronze Age date (c.2350-1600 BC) . Two of the flakes, are tertiary retaining no cortex, while the remaining pieces retain between 5 and 25% of their cortex. All of the ventral surfaces, have large bulbs of percussion and strongly defined, closely spaced conchoidal ripple marks idicative of the use of a stone hammer. All the flakes are broad, with evidence of short sub-parallel semi-abrupt retouch running along one mesal edge, probably for use as scrapers. One (top right in photo) has long parallel semi-abrupt retouch around the cu…

Object type: CORE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a probably Neolithic flint core dating to the period c.4000-2350BC, probably a core refreshment flake. The core, has a C-shaped profile, and retains >25% of its thick, cortex, covering one side. A clear bulb of percussion on the ventral faceshows where it has been struck of the core, there is also a large chip from this face. The dorsal face shows the end of removals that have come down towards a point from several different places around a platform suggesting this was the point of a conical core. Some of the removals appear blade like but only small sections remain maki…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A retouched flake in the form of a side scraper of probable Neolithic date (c. 4000 - 2350 BC). The piece, is broadly retangular in shape, with a slightly convex ventral face, and has been struck off a tertriary flake as no cortex remains. The ventral surface, exhibits a prominent bulbar scar, with a prominent bulb of percussion and closely spaced well defined conchoidal ripple marks but the bulb and striking platform have been removed by retouch. The dorsal surface, has five negative flake scars from previous removals, in two groups, 90 degrees from each other. One of the mesal edges…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A collection of eight pieces of flint and chert debitage of Mesolithic to Early Bronze Age date (c. 6000 - 1500 BC). Two of the pieces, have been struck off a secondary flake, retaining between 5 and 50% of their cortex, while the rest have been struck off a tertiary flakes retaining no cortex. Two of the pieces, both flint, are in the form of a blade with three negative flake scars, on the dorsal face, and low diffuse bulbs of percussion with weakly defined conchoidal ripple marks on the ventral face. The remaining pieces conist of three 'blade like flakes', which lack the paral…

Object type: CORE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A chip from a Mesolithic to Neolithic flint core dating to the period c. 8000 -2350 BC. The remaining piece retains no cortex, and is irregular in shape with a convex ventral surface formed of a very large percussion bulb. The core had two striking platforms roughly at right angles to each other, and at least three negative flake scars from previous flake removals, the size and shape of which suggests that this core was used for the production of blades or bladelets. The flint itself is dark grey with light grey and off-white inclusions. It is 25.00mm in length, with a maximum wid…

County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A group of twenty six pieces of Mesolithic flint and chert debitage in the form of blades and bladelets, dating to the period c. 9000-2350 BC. The majority of pieces have been struck off a tertiary flake with no evidence of cortex remaining. However three pieces have been struck off a secondary flake, retaining between 5 and 20% of their cortex. The dorsal faces on all pieces exhibit negative flake scars, with the majority of the assembalge only having only two (5 pieces have three or more negative flake scars). The ventral faces all exhibit a low diffuse bulb of percussion with we…

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A retouched flint flake of Mesolithic to Neolithic date (c. 9000-2350 BC) with evidence of light fire damage. The piece is broadly triangular in shape, and is a tertiary flake . The dorsal surface, has three negative parallel flake scars. The ventral surface, has a small bulb of percussion at the proximal end with a bulbar scar and widely spaced conchoidal ripple marks indicating this piece was struck off at 180 degrees to the previous removals. The proximal end has short scaled semi-abrupt retouch running a third of the way along its length, it is probable that this would have contin…

A flint flake of Mesolithic to Bronze Age date (c. 9000-2350 BC). It is broadly retangular in shape, and is has been struck off a tertiary flake as no cortex remains. The dorsal face, has two parallel negative flake scars from the removal of previous flakes in the form of blades or bladelets. The ventral surface also has widely spaced conchoidal ripple marks, but does not retain the striking platform or bulb which is now missing due to old breaks. The flint is dark grey in colour with several lighter grey and cream speckled inclusions. It is 26.64mm in length with a maximum width o…
