A cast lead token of Medieval date. The circular token is of thin section but survives intact. On one side, executed in low relief, is the image of a hooded figure standing right, the right hand holding a pole with a mesh bag at the upper end. A swag extends diagonally across the body, while the top of his legs - the area below the knee is not visible - are covered with a vertically segmented garment. The left arm bends upwards from the elbow, the hand holding a stylised cup, from which the figure drinks. The other side of the token is occupied by a shield containing a plain chevron…

Half of a cast copper alloy token or coin. The item is a disk with a prominent raised design of a bust on one side. The break is old and patinated. The remaining half appears to have a blank reverse and there is no inscription on the obverse. While the style of the bust, from what can be seen, appears classical without the upper half of the head it is hard to be sure and classical style busts were also popular in the 17th to 19th centurys. It does not apppear to be a coin and may have been a token of some type. Lead tokens with imperial busts of probable Roman date are also known e.g. …

For similar impressed objects, see this database at: LON-8C0467, WAW-013507 and LIN-FE2DF8, which has been described as a probably metal working hoard, or maybe a forgers hoard. A suggestion by Dr. Martin Henig for LON-8C0467 was a tessera used possibly as a pass to allow entry into a military building or the Baths, for example. An alternative possiblity is as a seal, but theer are no holes for the attachment of cord.
