An incomplete Roman copper alloy hinged developed T-shaped brooch dating to AD 75 to 150. The surviving portion comprises of part of the head with a tab and the upper part of the bow. The brooch appears to have a high tin or zinc conent or heavy white metal coating giving a silvery appearence.
The brooch has open-ended cylindrical wings that extend for 31.9 mm in width and 4.3 mm in diameter. The left wing is complete and decorated at the end with two incised lines across the front only. The right wing survives for 14.4 mm in width to an old break with traces of white cement. The w…

An incomplete Medieval cast copper-alloy strap-fitting dating to AD 1350 to 1400. The bar mount originally consisted of two parallel arms that were linked at the base by a semi-circular suspension loop. This loop has worn through so the two arms are now separate each with part of the loop attached. the inner side of the loop has sides that fold in suggesting it was made by hammering the sides of the strip. An incomplete Early Roman copper alloy applied hook brooch of unusually strip like bow dating to AD 40 to 80. Only the bow and one wing survive, the rest is missing to old breaks. The remaining wing projects out at 90 degrees to the head and is a rectangular plate, 7.6mm long, with the broad face towards the front, the end does not bend back to hold the spring. There is an old break across the rest of the head but it appears it was flat and thin between the wings.

A coin hoard of four copper alloy cartwheel pennies of George III, Birmingham mint second issue, dated 1797 (Spink p.417 no.3777). Probably a chance purse loss. One penny has been deliberately bent in two places and drilled through. As this modified coin was found in a group with other pennies, suggested to be a purse loss, it can be inferred that, despite the modification, the coin would still have been an accepted item of tender.

It is roughly oval in plan and bullet-shaped with two irregularly shaped outer pieces of oxidised, white-patinated lead, one larger than the other, sandwiching a fragment of the original ceramic pot. An incomplete late Iron Age copper alloy Nauheim-derivative brooch of expanded bow form (Feugère 1985 type 11a). The bow and most of the catchplate survive. The bow retains about six centimetres of the spring at the head. The coils of the spring and the integral pin have been lost to an old break.

The pin, spring mechanism and the lower part of the bow, including the catch-plate, are missing.
The brooch is generally T-shaped in plan and has wings which are semi-cylindrical and open at the rear. In plan, the bow narrows from the wings towards the break at the bottom. Michener (1988: 176) catalogues some very similar examples (Nos. 442a-445) and some others somewhat less well matched are listed in Saunders (2001: 233-234, 256), Nos. 125, 129 and 140. Body sherd from a small cup, bowl or jar with almost vertical sides. The fabric is mid orange with some fine quartz temper. The exterior is decorated with white slip interrupted by four turned parallel lines at the top and indented ovals with dignal scratches across them below. A yellow glaze over all appears brown on the inside and areas where the slip has been removed.
This form of decoration is typical of South Somerset ware of the late 17th to 19th centurys altough the scratched ovals are slightly unusual.

A Medieval copper alloy double looped bucke, probably dating to c. AD 1350-1650. The buckle comprises of two oval loops with a D-shaped cross section. The front of the frame is decorated with a series of regularly spaced relatively deep, obliquely angled grooves. A copper alloy pin remains around the bar. The pin is D-shaped in cross section with a flat back and tapoers slightly to a slightly undercut point.

Roman incomplete cast copper alloy developed T-shaped brooch dating to the early second century AD. The head has two short cylindrical wings, 30.1mm wide, to hold the axis bar for the hinged pin. Between the wings is a slot in which the pin would have hinged. There is corrosion surrounding this slot and visible in the ends of the wings suggesting the hinge bar and possibly the pin were of iron. The wings are undecorated. There is an incomplete tab at the head which has broken across a central circular hole and is now trapezoid in shape.

An incomplete Medieval lead pilgrim's ampulla dating to the period c.AD 1350 - 1530. Most of the neck, loops and part of the body of the ampulla are missing with just a small part of the trapezoid neck and the stub of one loop remaining. The lower half is circular. On one face is a compass drawn flower design, probably of six petals, the other may be plain or the design may be worn away or obscured by corrosion. The lead has a thick off-white patina. The inside contains a hard white concretion.

A medieval copper alloy mount dating to the period c.AD 1350-1400 The mount has a large central domed boss that is decorated with five horizontal grooves. Either side of this central lobe is a circular domed lug with a separate small copper alloy rivet running through a hole in the centre to secure the fitting to the strap or belt. The rivets are complete with roved ends, one bent to the side. The reverse is concave behind the central boss and end lugs. There are traces of a green patina on the upper surface.

A Post-Medieval lead cloth seal, probably dating to c. AD 1550-1800. The seal is incomplete, with only the integral rivet and an adjoining section of the disc from which it expands surviving. The surviving section of the disc depicts a design of an eagle or perhaps more likely, a griffin, advancing left, right foot in front with each talon terminating in a pellet.

The cap has been crushed, with the sides squashed closely together. The remains of two attachment loops survive at the top of the cap, one on either side. Faint vertical casting seams are visible on either side of the cap, on a line perpendicular to the attachment loops.

The outer surface is covered in irregularly sized circular pits, possbily beginning in a spiral but becoming very irregular on the sides. The thimble measures 18.22mm in diameter at the base, 17.60mm in height and weighs 2.94g.
Holmes (1988) notes irregularly spaced pits seen in this example are features typical of an earlier date range with pits generally arranged in neat spirals by the 16th century.

A post medieval to modern copper alloy finger ring. The ring has eight panels each of which is decorated with the same pattern. This gives it a faceted, octagonal outline with a circular centre. This is a raised pattern on a recessed field and comprises a central quatrefoil surrounded by pellets and in each corner is a trefoil within lobes. Incised vertical lines separate the panels. There is no visible makers mark. The ring measures 19.69 in diameter 6.9mm wide and 1.9mm thick, and weighs 19.69g.
The form and decoration suggests a 17th to 19th century date.

A copper alloy fragment, probably of a Roman bow brooch, probably dating to c. AD 40-200. The fragment consists of a flat strip of copper alloy, 1.2mm thick, and tapering from 5.5mm at one end to 2.8mm just prior to the other, at which point it expands again to 3.4mm wide. Both ends terminate in worn breaks. The inside of the band is undecorated with a rough area where a catch could be but no clear evidence of one. A medieval (c.1250-1400) copper alloy circular seal matrix with a pierced semi-circular lug to the reverse. To the opposite (front) face it depicts a six-pointed star, a pellet in each angle, above a crescent. Surrounding this is the inscription + S'WILL'I FIL' REINBERD which translates as Seal of William (WILLELMI) son of Reinberd. The initial cross is a cross potent.
The reverse of the seal matrix is undecorated although there is a transverse groove at the base of the lug which extends on one side slightly further than the other, into the centre of the reverse of the matrix.

Post Medieval silver penny of the Commonwealth dating to AD 1649 to 1660. North (1997:206) no.2729.
The coin has a worn piercing from the reverse to the obverse near the edge and probably originally circular, at 1 o'clock ont he obverse and 6 o'clock on the reverse. The top and and bottom edges have been bent forward and back to give an S-shaped profile, common on modified coins of this period.
Part of the edge is also missing to an old break.

Description
A complete post-Medieval gold finger ring. The ring has a hexagonal bezel, set with a finely faceted garnet which projects from the bezel; convex in profile. Each lateral face of the bezel is decorated with a rectangular facet, with a lower border in slight relief, with a central upwards pointed projection. The underside of the bezel is 'keeled' and faceted, with each bearing a foliate motif left reserved against a niello inlaid field. The hoop is circular in cross-section, with shoulders decorated in the same fashion.

A Post-Medieval copper alloy enamelled button dating to c. AD 1640-1700. The button is circular in plan, with a convex front and concave reverse. From the centre of the reverse an integral shank expands, terminating in a now incomplete drilled loop. Traces of iron corrosion are affixed to both the loop and reverse face of the button, suggetsing the original presence of an iron chain.

Description: A gold finger ring inscribed on the inner side. The ring is D shaped in cross section with flattened facets top and bottom, a convex outer face and flat inner face. The outer face is plain with some minor indents and scratches. The inner is inscribed with a posy in italic script: Gods blessing bee on thee and mee. The uprights are elongated and curled and the tail of the final e extended. There is no makers mark.

Description: The attachment end of a silver-gilt strap end of later Medieval date with zoomorphic decoration. The strap end is trapezoid in shape, narrowing towards the broken terminal and rectangular in cross section. It is box like, formed of separate front and back plates and side strips with an open rectangular centre. At the complete end are two separate silver rivets, roved over flush with the front and back. A Post-Medieval to Modern discoidal lead weight, probably dating to c. AD 1550-1850. The weight is discoidal (circular and flat), c. 30.9mm in diameter and 7.7mm thick. Both faces are stamped, with a "B" on one side and several other incomplete or unclear stamps and on the other, at 9 o'clock relative to the previous stamp, is the letter "P". Both stamps comprised of an incuse sub-rectangular field leaving the capital letter raised within.
It weighs 54.31g, 1.91 ounces suggesting it was originally a two ounce weight.

Probably a palaeolithic flint tool reused in the later prehistoric period, possibly as a knife or other cutting tool. The tool is of a dark brown/black flint, rolled and with significant areas of iron staining. At more recent removal scars the flint can be seen to be mottled with cloudy white areas and rare white inclusions. The tool is D-shaped in plan, and with a truncated pointed oval cross section, with the dorsal face being more pronouncedly curved than the ventral.

A Flint borer, probably Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age, c. 3300-1000 BC. Worked from a tertiary flake of very dark brown/black flint with some grey/brown patches near proximal end. No striking platform survives, with a relatively diffuse bulb of percussion although with a bulbar scar. A fragment of cast copper-alloy knife handle dated c.16th century. The fragment remains as the knife end cap or pommel with only very faint traces of the iron tang around the egde. The object is oval in shape and is decorated with incised parallel lines with a central design of chevrons or Z's between.
Reference: Similar examples can be found Read (2001: p.88, no.654) which he dates to the 16th century.
